Rock The Week

22 May 2024

Prince of Peace, Energy of the Universe, Creator of Love, Love Itself, sweep through the hearts of all so that the world will care for others and your creation and see you before themselves. Amen.

Make Us Part of Your Chosen Spiritual Family

No matter who you are or where you are on life's journey,

you are welcome here!

Memorial Day was first known as “Decoration Day” with the purpose of honoring the dead after the Civil War. There are many stories and songs about the origins of Memorial Day from both the North and South, but the main point is about communities coming together to honor the members of their community who gave their all. Through these acts of remembering and giving thanks, there is healing and reconciliation.

This Sunday we remember and we give thanks. Also, being true to Shadow Rock’s cutting edge spirit, we give ourselves permission to question authority, and the motives of authority, that would send our people in harm’s way. Our remembering and thanksgiving can move us to greater civic responsibility and better stewardship of the lives of our neighbors who are called upon to serve. We take a “comprehensive view of life” and celebrate all that life is. Join us this Sunday at 10:15 am.

PRESCHOOL NEWS AND HAPPENINGS

SUMMER CAMP

The Future Is In Good Hands!

ESCAPE THE HEAT BY WORKING JUNE 1 AT OUR CAMPUS

We will have a work morning June 1st, 8:30 -11:30 am, inside the Education Building. The work will focus on cleaning ceiling light covers and air vents. We thank Cathy and Tom Matejka for leading this effort for June.

CONGREGATIONAL MEETING IS JUNE 2ND AFTER WORSHIP

On the agenda are elections of board members and a vote of confidence for the direction of our Transition Team and Board.

Candidates for the board are pictured below.

It is always an honor to serve Shadow Rock, and being on the Board is one way to do that. I have served several years on the Board previously and it is always an enriching experience. The biggest perk of serving on the SR Board, is the opportunity to work with talented, creative, and dedicated people that have the same passion for Shadow Rock as I do. I look forward to our chance to help move Shadow Rock into a bright and sustainable future.

Hi,

I’m Cathy Arnold Matejka (call me either or both last names, whatever suits you). My husband Tom and I became empty nesters and moved to Phoenix almost two years ago from Milton, Massachusetts, where we raised our boys Dane (26) and Jackson (20). They are still on the east coast, so we all do a lot of flying. I am the emotional support person for our rescue dog, Ella, who looks forward to visits from her boys. I grew up in NJ, went to college in PA, and then to law school in Boston. My work has mostly been in litigation, and for the last 20 years I have been a solo practitioner focusing on family law and child care and protection cases. At our former church in Massachusetts, I was a Trustee, a member of the pre-school’s Board, the Treasurer, and an alto in the choir. We were happy to find Shadow Rock and look forward to continuing to get to know the community!

Your copy should address 3 key questions: Who am I writing for (audience)? Why should they care (benefit)? What do I want them to do (call-to-action)?

I am married to my lovely wife Barbe and have two children, David and Brianne. I grew up in Arizona and have lived in the Phoenix area since 1972 . Barbe and I have attended Shadow Rock since 2011.

I hope to serve on the board and utilize the skills I have attained on my life journey. I hope to gain the experience of working with the board and moving forward with Shadow Rock.

Let's Find Out June 9th

What is that strange wonky wedgeblade cross thingy?

Why is Shadow Rock so inclusive?

Where is the "Cave"?

This is a good time to learn more about Shadow Rock and ask questions about belonging to our family in an official capacity. We will meet after worship on June 9th in the Multipurpose Room. This is our gathering that leads up to Claiming Sunday. What is "Claiming Sunday"? Come to LFO and find out.

This flag means ALL ARE WELCOME! Additionally, it gives a message of inclusivity to specific people who have historically been excluded.

We Celebrate 25 Years of Being An Open and Affirming Congregation

June 30th we will celebrate Shadow Rock's congregational vote to be an Open and Affirming Congregation to all people. Our celebration will have music, a potluck, and a visit with Dr. Toni Hawkins (our Southwest Conference Minister).

PLEASE NOTE WE ARE LOOKING FOR SOME PEOPLE TO COORDINATE THE POTLUCK. CONTACT THE CHURCH OFFICE!

WE CELEBRATE ONE OF OUR

CLIMATE FRIENDLY INITIATIVES!

HERE ARE SOME NUMBERS RELATED TO SHADOW ROCK SOLAR ENERGY PROGRAM.

We have two solar systems at Shadow Rock; one on the sanctuary roof and one on the roof of the education building. Together they have a DC capacity of 90kW as described below:

Solar module manufacturer:             Hanwha Solar

PV module size:                               240 Watts

Quantity of modules:                        375

Total DC capacity = 240x375:          90 kW

Inverter manufacturer:                     Fronius

Inverter size:                                   12.5 kW

Quantity of inverters:                       6

Total AC capacity = 6x12.5:            75 kW

We monitor the performance of the solar systems on the Fronius website from which we obtained the following information:

Energy generated over the life of the SRC solar systems = 1,133,463 kWh

From the Fronius website, this has resulted in:

Carbon dioxide avoidance: 613 Tons

This is equivalent to: 15,717 mature trees

                                  1,537,375 avoided road miles

Our solar panel system generates about 2/3 of the energy we use.

WE ARE RECRUITING FOR ART SHOW 2024, MAYBE!

Everyone is in agreement that our 50th Anniversary Art Show was a great event that celebrated our core values, our community, and local artists. All of us want to do it again but we remain open to other possibilities as we explore potential leadership for this Fall 2024 event. Shadow Rock's governing board is hanging on to this idea and exploring ways to move it forward. Let them know what you think and are willing to do.
