Join us at Equity on the Road

A Message from Reyna Villalobos, The Center's Managing Director of Regional Programs

This year, we’re taking our flagship advocacy event Equity on the Mall on the Road. The San Joaquin Valley Health Fund (SJVHF) is incredibly excited to invite you to one of our three Equity on the Road regional town halls. We’re going directly to communities to facilitate crucial conversations on policy and systems change. With town halls in Bakersfield (April 17), Madera (April 18) and Stockton (April 19), we will gather community partner organizations, elected officials and local residents to uplift key policy issues affecting community residents across the San Joaquin Valley. We’re rising across the Valley in a unifying call for racial justice, health equity, immigration justice, housing justice, education access, environmental justice and more.

Join us on the road. SJVHF is a partnership of more than 170 nonprofit organizations and over 40 local, state and national foundations working to advance health and racial equity for San Joaquin Valley residents. Learn more about Equity on the Road and register today.

Faith Made Flesh reflects on BCLC's successes

Last month, the Black Child Legacy Campaign (BCLC) brought together community partners in a Black History Month celebration of "Faith Made Flesh: The Black Child Legacy Campaign for Transformative Justice and Healthy Futures," a book reporting on BCLC's 10-year impact addressing disproportionate health outcomes for Sacramento's Black communities.

Editors and community authors took the stage to reflect on BCLC’s success in reducing deaths in the areas of perinatal conditions, infant sleep, child abuse and neglect and third-party homicide. Through "Faith Made Flesh," BCLC’s values, structure and dedication is clearly portrayed as a blueprint for successful social change anywhere and everywhere. MBK celebrates 10 years of impact

We're celebrating the 10th anniversary of My Brother's Keeper (MBK)! MBK Sacramento began when President Obama signed the My Brother's Keeper Memorandum in February 2014, calling for national attention on the persistent opportunity gaps faced by boys and young men of color. For nearly a decade now, MBK Sacramento has brought together systems leaders, community partners and young people to address population-level health, education, employment and justice system disparities for young men of color through policy advocacy, systems change and support for effective programs. In September 2023, MBK Sacramento was recognized as a My Brother's Keeper certified city for its collective impact infrastructure shaped by the MBK Equity Framework: collaboration, sustainability, data driven decisions and more. Learn more about MBK Sacramento.

Asthma Mitigation Project Final Evaluation Report provides important lessons for the field

Between 2020 and 2023, Asthma Mitigation Project (AMP) community-based partners provided culturally and linguistically appropriate asthma home visiting services to individuals in California with poorly controlled asthma. The AMP Final Evaluation Report summarizes the program’s implementation and accomplishments, including its contribution to the state’s policy shift to expand asthma home visiting services as part of Medi-Cal’s asthma benefits. The Final Evaluation Report also highlights overarching recommendations for asthma home visiting programs emerging from the lessons learned delivering AMP services. The Center contracted with Harder+Company Community Research to conduct a three-year evaluation of the program, resulting in the report, available in English, Spanish and as an executive summary.

Senior Program Officer Myel Thelen was recognized recently by Girl Scouts Heart of Central as one of eight Empowering Leaders, celebrating the impact of real Girl Scouts. Myel, co-author of "Step Up to Run: Women Shaping the Future of Politics and Public Policy," credits her Girl Scout experience with teaching her how to work in a collaborative environment - a skill she uses daily working with community-based partners on the Foster Youth Substance Use Disorder, Vaccine Equity Campaign and COVID-19 Mitigation Project programs.
