Volunteer to compost pumpkins!
Join the fun while keeping valuable nutrients out of the landfill and preventing methane emissions. Gather pumpkins in your neighborhood and transport them to a local collection site or help at one of the events. Contact Erin at erin@scarce.org to learn more.


Wondering how you can compost leftover food scraps and yard materials at your school, home, or organization? This workshop will provide all of the information you need to get started or to improve your current composting practices.

Recycle used cooking oil into biodiesel!

Multiple sites will be accepting containers of oil during this annual collection on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Contact Erin at erin@scarce.org to find out how you or your students can help at this event.
Science in Action!

Did you know you can take your students on a field trip to the Elmhurst quarry?

This video gives a glimpse of the development of the quarry for flood prevention as well as the geology and history of the quarry. Visiting the quarry is great for Environmental Science, Physics, Chemistry, and Biology students!
Eco-Extraordinaire
Congratulations to York Community High School in Elmhurst for recertifying its Earth flag!
SCARCE trained 326 staff on environmental issues, completed two waste audits, and provided education programs to students. The high school even has a solar array that was partially funded by its eco-club.

Hinsdale South AP Environmental Science Classes Visit SCARCE
On October 5th, SCARCE welcomed two classes from Hinsdale South High School for a tour and a sustainability program. The students helped with some recycling projects too!

Contact Kay at kay@scarce.org if your class or eco-club would like to schedule a field trip to learn about conserving natural resources and building sustainable communities.
Touring the SCARCE facility
SCARCE's Executive Director, Kay McKeen, describes how to make earth-friendly choices. As a bonus, IL Rep Terra Costa Howard addressed the students during her visit to share information about environmental work she has done this past year.
Borrow a watershed model
Complete SCARCE's watershed training program and you can borrow these models to teach your students how to keep our water clean. Alternatively, SCARCE can visit your school to lead this hands-on activity that engages students in identifying water pollution problems and solutions.

Local Schools Organize Collections for SCARCE

This month, students from Naperville North High School and Pleasantdale Middle School gathered books, school supplies, and recyclables and delivered them to SCARCE. Naperville North students took a tour of our facility too.
