SHERB TALKS PRESENTS:

SEPTEMBER IS SCIENCE MONTH!  KEVIN MCNEILL --- "A Martian Speaks in Plain English"

September 18th

Doors & Bar @ 7 pm

Lecture at 7:30 pm

$10 Admission.   At the Sherbino

Local Log-Hill resident Kevin McNeill will talk about the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter program and his leadership role/career experiences while with Lockheed Martin Propulsion/NASA.

Kevin was senior project manager for Lockheed Martin Propulsion on all of NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter program flights from 1996 thru his retirement in 2007.  Kevin has an uncanny ability to bring a humanistic "high-touch" to very "high-tech" matters of deep space exploration.  His passion, experience and practical knowledge lends a common sense understanding of NASA's remarkable, decade-long Mars exploration program, allowing one to better appreciate the success of the current celebrity of Mars explorer "Curiosity", which continues to make startling scientific news reported worldwide.

OURAY COUNTY RAILROAD DAYS

SEPTEMBER 18-21 To Feature Talk on Railcar Restoration

Railroad Museum Logo The weekend of September 18 - 21 will provide plenty of opportunity to experience the railroad heritage of the San Juan Mountains as the Ridgway Railroad Museum presents the thirteenth annual Ouray County Railroad Days.

The weekend kicks off on Thursday and Friday with guided hikes along the route of Otto Mears' Silverton Railroad, from Red Mountain Pass to the Albany town site below Ironton. Thursday's route will go from the top of the pass to the Guston town site, and the Friday route will continue from Guston to the Corkscrew turntable, then to the railbed's terminus north of Ironton. Trip leader Don Paulson advises that these downhill hikes require some bushwhacking, so participants should wear long pants, bring lunch and weather gear, and be in good shape. Meet at the Corkscrew Gulch 4WD trailhead, 7.8 miles south of Ouray on US 550, by 9:00 AM. Call Paulson at 970-325-0931 for information.

Saturday, the Museum (located at the corner highways 550 and 62) hosts an open  house from 9:00 AM - 5:00 PM, including rides on RGS Motor No. 1 on the half hour.  Saturday will also feature an open house at Don Paulson's extensive model layout between 9 AM and noon, and a guided auto tour of the Ouray Branch of the Denver and Rio Grande route leaving the museum at 1:30 PM.

The evening talk this year is a PowerPoint presentation on restoration of narrow gauge railcars by Bill Pratt of Grand Junction. Bill has been a project leader for restorations on the Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad, as well as an enthusiastic worker on restorations at the Ridgway Railroad museum. This interesting talk will be held at the Ouray Elks lodge at 421 Main Street in Ouray at 7:00 PM.

The weekend will conclude on Sunday with a guided tour of the Rio Grande Southern route from Ridgway to Lizard head Pass. This will be a car caravan with talks by Museum staff at selected viewpoints. The trip will leave the museum at 9:30 AM and return by 4:00 PM. The trip is limited to a maximum of eight cars, so pre-registration is encouraged.

For more information about Ouray County Railroad Days, call 970-626-4239 or

RIDGWAY RIVERWALK VOLUNTEERS NEEDED

Work Day:  Saturday, September 20th

Chip Marlow is the man responsible for our beautiful River walk. He planned it, raised the money, organized the work, and still does much of the maintenance (with help from the town of Ridgway). He and his wife even clean the toilet.

He needs help. Every fall he tightens the screws on the trex bridge because they otherwise cause problems in clearing snow during the winter. There are 4000 screws, so this is really a chore for one person. He'd appreciate 10-12 volunteers, with heavy-duty drill drivers and extra Phillips head bits (size #1 or #2 to fit 4" deck screws), extra batteries, and vice grips. He'll provide replacement screws and a generator to charge batteries.

We've set our work day for Saturday, September 20, 9 am-4 pm. If you are experienced at working with these drills, are willing to help, and can put in a 3-hour stint, please let me know. If you can't come but could lend us the tools, that would be great too.  Contact Paula:  paulajames22@earthlink.net

Tri-County Health Network Survey - Take it Today!

Dear Chamber Members,

Tri-County Health Network is working to better understand the health needs of the communities we serve and has developed a survey to identify the healthcare needs of these communities throughout the Westend, San Miguel, and Ouray counties. The health survey takes about ten minutes to complete. In September we will share the results and draft a plan that targets resources and funding to move forward in addressing identified community needs. The link will be active through 9/15/14.   I am writing to ask if you would please share the link to our Community Health Needs Survey with your employees, friends and neighbors.
