PROJECT UPDATE AND ACTIVITY REPORT

June 3, 2024

PROJECT UPDATE

  • VDOT received Right-of-Way notice to proceed for Phase 1 in May 2024.
  • Total take acquisitions, the properties where VDOT needed to acquire the entire property, have been completed in Phase 1 and Phase 2. Some already acquired properties have lease back agreements until the property owner or tenant can relocate, or if the property is needed for the project. Properties that have been acquired by VDOT and are vacant will be demolished as soon as possible. Six demolitions have already been completed with an additional eight anticipated.
  • VDOT’s right-of-way agents will be contacting impacted Phase 1 property owners to discuss necessary partial acquisitions, where only a portion of an existing property is needed for right-of-way or easements. This will be for Phase 1 only, as shown on the map below. Right-of-way acquisitions for Phase 2 are scheduled to begin later this year.
  • A Guide for Property Owners and Tenants is available on VDOT’s website in English and in Spanish.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION ABOUT THE RIGHT-OF-WAY PROCESS

It is not necessary for property owners or tenants with anticipated acquisitions to reach out to VDOT. VDOT will make contact with the owner first, and will then make contact with tenants, if applicable.

Each property acquisition is unique. If owners or tenants have specific questions ahead of a right-of-way agent contacting them, they may reach out to VDOT’s project manager Dan Reinhard, whose contact information can be found at the bottom of this email. Once a right-of-way agent has contacted you, they are your best source of information on the acquisition process.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

This project will improve approximately three miles of Richmond Highway from Jeff Todd Way to Napper Road in Fairfax County. The proposed plan will widen the road from four to six lanes, provide separate cycle tracks and ADA accessible sidewalks on both sides of the road, and reserve the median width necessary to accommodate Fairfax County's future Bus Rapid Transit plans for dedicated bus-only lanes.
