Local Libations
Steamy summer weather is just around the corner. What better way to do that than with a farmers’ market cocktail? I call this the EFM Spring Cider.

This drink is refreshingly simple: three parts Scholl’s apple cider, 1 part Social Still gin, gently stirred in a rocks glass over a large ice cube, then topped with 1-2 dashes of the bitters of your choice and a twist of orange.

The bitters I happened to have on hand were The Bitter Housewife’s cardamom bitters, which I bought at Mercantile Outpost in the Easton Public Market. I fell in love with these, and the cinnamon-y bouquet is perfect for an apple-based drink.

It’s worth noting, a common misconception is that a dash of bitters is a drop or two. In reality, a dash is equivalent to about 10 single drops. So don’t be shy with your bitters - but of course, use however much you prefer.

For those looking to forgo the alcohol, don’t discredit the effect a garnish of bitters and orange peel can have on apple cider alone - or any preferred nonalcoholic beverage, for that matter. On the hotter days recently, I have taken to putting my favorite pear/hibiscus-flavored sparkling water over ice and topping it with the cardamom bitters. Even a small citrus garnish can elevate whatever you’re drinking and make for a refreshing treat!
