| SEEKING EICHA READERS FOR TISHA B'AV |
| This year, Tisha B'Av begins on Saturday evening, July 25. Our services that night will include the traditional chanting from the Book of Lamentations, Eicha, in its beautiful, unique trope. We are seeking volunteers from our community who would like to chant a portion of Eicha for our service. We know that many of our congregants know how to do this, and we would like to include as many participants as possible. You can recite an entire chapter or a portion of a chapter, whichever you prefer. Please volunteer by contacting Joel Sowalsky no later than Monday, July 6, at joel@dailygc.com. Thank you. |

Likhvod Haverim /
Dear Friends
This coming Shabbat we celebrate the Bat Mitzvah of Keren Kohane. Mazal tov to Keren, Daniel, Lauren and Ariel! We are proud and excited to join the family in this simcha.
Our Torah reading this Shabbat is Parashat Korach, a story many know by the image of Korach and his followers being swallowed up by the earth. We learn from the mishna (Pirkei Avot 5:17) that
"any dispute that is for the sake of Heaven is destined to endure; one that is not for the sake of Heaven is not destined to endure. Which is a dispute that is for the sake of Heaven? The dispute(s) between
Hillel
and
Shamai
. Which is a dispute that is not for the sake of Heaven? The dispute of Korach and all his company."
Our rabbis here describe Korach as one whose dispute doesn't enhance holiness in the world, but depletes it. The Hasidic master the Sefat Emet picks up on this mishna and teaches that we can understand Korach's character - and his claim against Moses and Aaron - based on the first two words of the parasha: "vayikach Korach," meaning "Korach took" (Numbers 16:1).
Judaism teaches that it is only through the entire community that God's will is fulfilled in the world. So everyone must give some of his or her prosperity and blessing over to the community. This was the quality of Aaron, and why he was chosen to be a priest. But Korach "took" from the community. He was for himself, and in doing so, divided the community. What is the "klal gadol", the greatest principle in Torah" according to our sages? "Love your neighbor as yourself."
I wish you all a Shabbat shalom, full of peace and wonder.
