Now is the time to register your children for Ma'or or Gan Ma'or. Ma'or is the joint Hebrew School of Temple Reyim, Mishkan Tefila and Temple Emeth. Ma'or is an innovative, hands on Jewish learning opportunity for grades 1-7. All kids learn to read, write and speak (some) Hebrew as they move through the program. Gan Ma'or is our preschool program for students aged 3 through kindergarten. The program meets twice a month, with children learning Hebrew songs, lots of stories, projects, and music and movement. Please feel free to contact directors Erin or Samara with any questions at maorboston@gmail.com or call 617-564-0460.

Likhvod Haverim /
Dear Friends
This Shabbat we celebrate the Bar Mitzvah of Raphael Goldberg. Raphi has worked exceptionally hard and we're very proud of him. Mazal tov to Raphi, Susan, Sam, and Liza on this wonderful simcha.
Our Torah reading this Shabbat is parashat Beha'alotcha. The parasha begins with an instruction to mount the menorah, made from a single piece of hammered gold, at the front of the lampstand of the "Ohel Moed," the Tent of Meeting. There is strong emphasis on the menorah as the most spiritually significant furnishing of the Tent of Meeting. The menorah was tended to by the priests twice daily, with precise instructions on how to light and position the lamps.
Why is the menorah so important? It is reminiscent of the first sign of God's presence in the world ("let there be light"), and it mirrors the burning bush, God's radiant presence that would not be consumed. Though light is eternal, it is always in risky relationship with darkness, vulnerable to being extinguished or overshadowed. The menorah represents not just the metaphor of light but the tension of light and darkness, which is where God so often dwells.
I wish you all a Shabbat shalom, full of peace and wonder.
