BACK TO SCHOOL BBQ

There is no charge for the BBQ but donations are gratefully accepted. Please RSVP at www.maorboston.org with numbers attending.

INVITATION TO HIGH HOLY DAY HONORS

Before you know it, the High Holy Days will be upon us! We recently sent an email invitation to the community to participate in High Holy Day services. You can let the Religious Services Committee know here which honors you would find meaningful. If you have any questions, please contact Eva Radding or Rabbi Berman.

MA'OR / GAN MA'OR
Now is the time to register your children for Ma'or or Gan Ma'or. Ma'or is the joint Hebrew School of Temple Reyim, Mishkan Tefila and Temple Emeth. Ma'or is an innovative, hands on Jewish learning opportunity for grades K-7. All kids learn to read, write and speak (some) Hebrew as they move through the program. Gan Ma'or is our preschool program for students aged 3 through 5. The program meets twice a month, with children learning Hebrew songs, lots of stories, projects, and music and movement. Please feel free to contact directors Erin or Samara  with any questions
or call 617-564-0460.

Likhvod Haverim /  Dear Friends,

This Shabbat we experience the paradox of language and silence. We begin the Book of Deuteronomy, Sefer D'varim; and we are aware of and begin anticipating our observance of the 9th of Av, which begins as Shabbat goes out Saturday night (the 9th of Av is on Shabbat, but we suspend its observance until Shabbat ends).

Sefer D'varim enters us into the world of language. It is our tradition's first midrash: Moses is no longer conveying God's instructions to the children of Israel, he is now retelling, re-framing and re-imagining their experiences over the last many decades in the wilderness.

At the same time, even as we celebrate Shabbat, we know that Tisha B'Av is soon upon us, and we begin to anticipate a time of mourning, quiet prayer, and silence. The story Moses tells in Sefer D'varim is just the beginning of a people's story. Over the next many generations, we - the collective, conscious, shared "we" - experience great suffering, devastating destruction and persecution. Marking those times with silence and solemn elegies and lamentation gives us a different kind of story; one of memory, reflection, and hope. This great paradox of language and silence brings us fully into this Shabbat.

I wish you all a Shabbat shalom, full of peace and wonder.

L'shalom and chodesh tov,

Rabbi Berman

UPCOMING HIGHLIGHTS
TISHA B'AV

Tisha B'Av, Saturday night, July 25, through Sunday, July 26

Tisha B'Av (the 9th day of the Hebrew month of Av) is a day of mourning for the historic calamities to our people, especially the destruction of the first and second Temples and the subsequent 2000-year exile.  Like Yom Kippur, it is a 24-hour fast.  There are many unique aspects to services on Tisha B'Av, including the reading of the Book of Lamentations (Eicha), with its especially beautiful but mournful trope, the recitation of poems that were written throughout the ages for this day (Kinot), and the wearing of Tallit and Tefillin at the Mincha service instead of the Shacharit morning service, which is the only time during the year when this is done.

This year, the 9th of Av falls on Saturday, July 25, but since fasting on Shabbat is prohibited (except for Yom Kippur), the commemoration of Tisha B'Av is postponed until after Shabbat.  The fast begins at sunset on Saturday evening, at 8:12 p.m., and continues through 9:00 p.m. on Sunday night. On Saturday night, July 25, we will have Mincha, Ma'ariv, Eicha and Kinot beginning at 8:00 p.m. On Sunday morning, July 26, our Shacharit service will begin as usual at 9:00 a.m., followed by Kinot. On Sunday evening, our Mincha/Maariv services will begin at 8:00 p.m. and will be followed by "break the fast" refreshments. Please join us at one or all of these special services for our congregational observance of Tisha B'Av.

JEWISH BOOK GIVE-AWAY

Sunday morning, August 23 from 10 am - 12pm

The Temple Reyim Library Committee will be holding a Jewish Book Give-Away in the Youth Lounge. This is a chance to build your home library with books on Jewish history, thought, philosophy and commentaries. There will be a good selection of children's books, art and "coffee table" books as well. Donations will be welcomed. Please bring your own boxes and bags.

SHABBAT UNDER THE STARS

Friday, August 28 at 6pm

If you know friends, family members, colleagues or neighbors who are looking for a joyful, diverse, participatory synagogue experience, invite them to come for a "taste" of Temple Reyim at Shabbat under the Stars. We will host our annual Shabbat under the Stars in the beautiful synagogue courtyard when Rabbi Berman leads Kabbalat Shabbat services with singing and prayer. This will be followed by a Ma'ariv service and a scrumptious dinner catered by the Temple Reyim Ayin Chefs. If you have guests coming, please contact Bob Sullaway  so we can provide them with a warm welcome.
TZION: YEAR TWO
SEPTEMBER 9 PARLOR MEETING
 AND TRIP TO ISRAEL

The first year of Tzion at Temple Reyim was a resounding success. We learned about the origins of the Zionist idea. This year we will cover 1948 to the current times. Classes will commence after the High Holy Days. We will meet for two hours once a week for twenty weeks. At the conclusion of this year, we will join other area Tzion programs on an exciting trip to Israel, scheduled for May 8-20. If you did not participate last year but would like to join us this year or come on the trip to Israel, contact Ian Noy or Rabbi Berman as soon as possible. Tuition for the year is $400.00 ($300.00 per person for couples).  A parlor meeting will be held at the shul for returning and interested new participants on September 9 at 7:30pm to preview this coming year and register for the class.
