| SEEKING EICHA READERS FOR TISHA B'AV |
| This year, Tisha B'Av begins on Saturday evening, July 25. Our services that night will include the traditional chanting from the Book of Lamentations, Eicha, in its beautiful, unique trope. We are seeking volunteers from our community who would like to chant a portion of Eicha for our service. We know that many of our congregants know how to do this, and we would like to include as many participants as possible. You can recite an entire chapter or a portion of a chapter, whichever you prefer. Please volunteer by contacting Joel Sowalsky no later than Monday, July 6, at joel@dailygc.com. Thank you. |

Likhvod Haverim /
Dear Friends
This coming Shabbat we celebrate the Bat Mitzvah of Ariella and Bar Mitzvah of Erez Hatch. Mazal tov to Ariella and Erez, Steven and Miriam and the Tuchman and Hatch families! We are very proud and look forward to celebrating with and learning from you.
Our Torah reading is Shilach Licha, the story of the scouts. As Erez and Ariella will teach us, their reports cause the Israelites to spend forty years in the wilderness before reaching Eretz Yisrael, to end only when the generation that left Egypt has died. When viewed as a punishment for the reports of the scouts, who return to the Israelites fearful and seemingly full of doubt about the safety of entering the Land, forty years feels unbearable.
When viewed from a psycho-spiritual lens, the forty years is not a punishment but an insight - albeit a troubling and painful one - by God into the consciousness of a people. There are times when the psyche of a people is so hurt that the possibility for change, hope and optimism is surrendered. This is a devastating reality. Jewishly, only in rare circumstances do we resign ourselves to this understanding.
The opportunity to reclaim and let shine the fully openhearted faith that dwells within us is so deeply rooted in the Jewish consciousness. It is called teshuva; it is such a powerful force that the midrash teaches us that the energy of teshuvah actually preceded the creation of the world! But in the generation that left Egypt, God sees no opportunity. What makes the forty years so painful is not the punishment but the abandonment of possibility that strength, hope, and faith can still emerge and grow. Instead, the next generation is up.
I wish you all a Shabbat shalom, full of peace and wonder.
