Congratulations to Randy & Mary Spangler owners of NAFC-FC Mulligan's Off the Rainy "T." "Mully" and handler Randy, beat 137 other retrievers to win the 2017 National Amateur Retriever Championship that concluded last weekend in Mondovi, VI.
Here are some fun stats: 6.9 years old, 60 AA points (n
ow 65), 22 Derby points, 6x National qualifier, now a 3x finalist as well as winner, 8 All-Age wins, 3 Derby wins, originally owned and started by Tom Kobach, trained by Wayne Curtis (Fox Hollow Retrievers); 7 litters with pups competing, including one with FC-AFC Good Idea's National Pair, oldest pups are 3.5 years old. His siblings include: FC-AFC B. Bumble and FC-AFC 3R's Mister Cross Your T's.

There have been a number of good articles published recently on issues our dogs face. Some are long, but all are worth the read if it's a topic you're interested in.
Laryngeal Paralysis
This condition can affect dogs of any age, although it's more common with older dogs. The signs can be subtle, but are important to watch for. There are a number of treatments, with the "tieback" being the best choice for most.
New Screening Protocol for Canine Elbow Dysplasia
If you've had your dog's elbows x-rayed the technician may have told you "I don't know if they will pass." A Michigan State University Study found that "many dogs with normal elbows are diagnosed with Grade 1 elbow dysplasia and many dogs that actually have Grade 1 dysplasia are rated as normal."
The International Elbow Working Group has issued new screening guidelines and protocols that increase the accuracy of the diagnosis by upping the number and quality of x-rays.
P.S. Proper positioning is of course critical to hip xrays as well.
Aspergillosis -- A Destructive SInus & Nasal Disease
This is a fungal disease that causes nasal discharge in dogs, which if left untreated can get quite serious. Long-nosed dogs are particularly susceptible.
Brucellosis Update
Brucellosis is not only important in terms of breeding and whelping. it's also a zoonotic disease that can be transferred to humans. The AKC Canine Health Foundation is currently funding three canine brucellosis grants that are designed to improve diagnostics, develop a preventive vaccine and study the epidemiology of the organism.
OFA Site Now Mobile Friendly
The OFA website is a handy source of information. (Dogs included in Retriever Results have the OFA link -- where available -- as part of their profile.) The OFA now tracks clearances for Tricuspid Valve Dysplasis, whose incidence is growing in field labs.
Impact of Exercise on Puppy Growth Plates
We've pointed out links to articles like this before, but it's an important issue, so we thought we'd publish it again. It's easier to damage your pup's growth plates than you might think. When in doubt do less, particularly when it comes to jumping and running on hard surfaces. Moderation is key.
Upclose with an EIC Affected Puppy
It's a heart-breaking video. But it underscores the importance of testing sires and dams for carriage of EIC (and other genetic diseases) before breeding. And the importance of insisting on seeing clearances before you buy a pup.
