Building Relationships - Creating Policies that Work for Providers and Families
Policies are an essential part of running a professional child care business. Clear policies help families understand the boundaries of the provider-parent relationship.

Discussing policies upon enrollment is part of building a good parent-provider relationship. Regularly reviewing and updating policies ensures they continue to meet business needs.

Some things to consider when creating or updating child care program policies:

· What is the illness policy
· What are the hours and days of operation
· How is an enrollment waitlist managed
· What are the payment schedules and
expectations
· What is the procedure/charge for late
pickup
· Can families provide snacks and food
· What does the daily schedule include
· Are any screenings or developmental
checklists scheduled
· What is the emergency plan
Providers who would like support in developing policies, procedures, emergency plans, and building relationships with families are invited to contact our Resource and Referral department at 916-369-0191.

As of December 31, 2021, the CDSS waiver of the CPR/First Aid requirement for child care providers is expiring. Child care providers will once again need to have a current CPR/First Aid card. CPR/First Aid classes must have an in-person skills practice and evaluation component.

We have funding available for child care providers for reimbursement towards the cost of CPR/First Aid and Preventative Health training. The rebate forms and additional information can be found on our Health & Safety Rebate webpage. You must provide proof of purchase and copies of training cards. Reimbursements are allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Family Stories
While celebrating with family and friends this holiday season, make time to share stories about your family’s history. This is an awesome way to enjoy time with one other and share these stories with young family members who can pass them on to future generations.

Children can also write their own memories in a story to share! Prepare a list of questions for them to outline their story and encourage them to include pictures. Have a family member collect their stories and make copies to share with everyone.

When children are exposed to family stories they gain comprehension, vocabulary, and literacy skills as well as social-emotional and cultural development.
