Welding Camp introduced me to Kingswood, and 9 summers later I'm still a volunteer, administrator and part of the program directing team. I'm a relative newbie, but a committed one.
I find it hard to explain to friends the peace that comes over me when I arrive at Kingswood, and the joy I find in interacting with people here. Some friends have come along on a couple days of adventure and found a bit of it. The volunteer activities though make you part of a caring group of people.
I've seen the passionate squabbles over how to solve a problem, but I've also seen the compassion exhibited when something goes completely wrong. I've sat in circles where I disagreed with the person, but I better understand their point of view. My life is enriched by hearing their viewpoint. I've come to appreciate the gray, not always a right and a wrong.
This is a place of acceptance of who you are, and people appreciate what you bring to the conversation, project and community. I may not talk to someone for 10 months of the year, but I know when we meet again in the summer we will pick up where we left off.
The mission statement says it all. "Kingswood Campsite is a quiet, natural setting in which the development of positive, cooperative experiences are encouraged. This setting provides opportunities for community: strengthening of families, giving back through volunteering, nurturing of friendships, renewing of spirit, and growing in respect for God’s Creations." Kingswood is fulfilling it.
