I extend my deepest condolences and prayers for people who live on Maui and had losses or injuries due to the fires that occurred on August 9. Please try to donate to one of the funds that have been set up no matter how large or small your donation is. I will continue to keep them in my prayers as well as those who had losses or were injured in the temple collapse in Shimla in North India due to the flooding, which occurred on August 14.

In the last newsletter about the Sun-Venus conjunction I mentioned that Venus retrograde is combust according to Indian astrology when it is 8 degrees from the Sun and went into the heart of the Sun on August 8, and conjoined the Sun on August 13th, and will have its heliacal rising around August 19-21. What I did not mention in that newsletter about Venus is that when Venus retrograde forms hard aspects, these are repeated three times (when Venus is direct, retrograde, and direct again) and become more intense. Also, when tragedies occur like the fire on Maui and the temple flooding, as well as other things that are too numerous to mention, they usually happen for a few different astrological reasons. The fires on Maui occurred when Venus had its heliacal setting, which meant it could no longer be viewed and was combust the Sun (meaning Venus is obliterated by the Sun's rays and can no longer be seen) and on the day when Venus square Uranus was exact. Because it occurs three times, it could be one reason why they were difficult and sudden rather than sudden and enlightening, which are two definitions of Uranus. I do not know if the fires were precipitated by these two events, but as Uranus tends to do, the fires happened very quickly and unexpectedly, even though the conditions on the island may have been such that it could formulate something like this. (On the same day that the fires occurred a candidate running for the presidency in Ecuador was assassinated, and around the Venus-Sun conjunction the collapse of the Indian temple occurred.)

These aspects with Venus retrograde include Venus square Jupiter and Venus square Uranus and are especially important for events in the world, but also for the general mood that will define our environment and state of mind. It is especially important if those degrees conjoin a planet or point in our charts. Below are the days and degrees where they form the exact aspects. (More about these aspects in the September News and Views.) If you use Indian astrology, the squares are 10th sign aspects (25%) from Venus and 4th sign aspects (75%) from Jupiter and Uranus.

This month we have three lunations that occur with the Full Moon on Tuesday August 1, 2023, 06:27 PM GMT, Tropical. 09° Aquarius 15’; Sidereal. 15° Capricorn 10’ śravaṇā; the New Moon on Wednesday Aug 16 2023 09:37 AM GMT Tropical. 23° Leo 17’; Sidereal. 29° Cancer 11’ aśleṣā, and the Full Moon on Thursday Aug 31, 2023, 01:35 AM GMT, Tropical. 07° Pisces 25’. Sidereal. 13° Aquarius 19’ śātabhiṣaj. The first and last Moons are called supermoons and blue moons occur when there are three in a calendar month. If you have any planets, points, or angles around those degrees (I would take a one degree orb) then whatever is represented by that planet, point or angle, will be prominent and important until the next lunation, meaning that if something in your chart is conjunct this month's Full Moon on August 1, 2023, it will be prominent until the next Full Moon on August 31, 2023, if something in your chart is conjunct this month's New Moon on August 16, 2023, it will be prominent until the next New Moon on September 15, 2023. Finally, if something in your chart is conjunct this month's second Full Moon on August 31, 2023, it will be prominent until the next Full Moon on September 29, 2023, The New Moon represents beginnings and can help you to institute a change you have been thinking about while the Full Moon is an accomplishment or culmination and gives the push to continue on that path. If your birthday is between July 31-August 2 or between August 30-September 1, then the Full Moon is in your solar return (varṣaphala) or close enough that it will be important for the year ahead until your next birthday, meaning that it may be year when things you have been working on will manifest, or feel like they are moving in the right direction, so continue with whatever is fulfilling you. If your birthday is between August 15-17, then the New Moon is in your solar return (varṣaphala) or close enough that it will be important for the year ahead until your next birthday, meaning a change is bound to happen, so work on that change. It could be a physical move, job change, relationship change, or simply working on yourself to integrate new patterns and habits into your life. Expect a great deal of transformative experiences that will make you want to change or take a step in a different direction. Take your time but do head in that direction, since otherwise it will happen to you whether you initiate it or not. (Scroll down for more Celestial Events.)

As many of you know my book Venus: The Evolution of the Goddess and her Planet was published in 1993 and while it has been out of print for a while, it is still available on used book sites. The book, which was published by HarperCollins, was very well-received and went into a second printing, but a book will only stay in print with a major publisher for a certain period of time. I have wanted to revise the book and bring it up to date for a while, and finally I have begun that process. I am working hard to finish those revisions within the next six months and publish it again. Of course it might take longer than that and I have already received grants from the New York NCGR and the Urania Trust to help the project along. So watch out for my Kickstarter campaign which I will let you all know about as soon as I get it up and running, and I hope you will support it with a small donation.

Mercury Retrograde August 23-September 15, 2023

Mercury usually stays in one sign for about two-three weeks. Closer to the retrograde it can be in one sign for about two months. Mercury will be in tropical Virgo from July 29th through October 5th. Mercury will be in sidereal Leo from July 25th through October 2nd.  

What I write here is often repeated when I speak about Mercury retrograde, but it changes depending on the sign or signs Mercury travels through, the degrees of the stations, and other retrogrades that occur alongside Mercury retrograde.

You are especially affected by Mercury (which you may think is inconsequential but really is not) when you see that it is in one sign for a little over two months and you understand what that area of your chart represents. Look to where tropical Virgo or sidereal Leo falls and scroll down for more information. But you are especially affected during this retrograde arc between August 4 and September 30, 2023, if you have any planets, points, or angles, between Tropical. 08° Virgo 00’- 21° Virgo 51’ or between Sidereal 13° Leo 54’ and 27° Leo 45’. Remember that Mercury will cross those degrees three times, but if you have something within one degree of the station (the degree it goes retrograde or direct) Mercury will conjoin it twice, but when it conjoins the station it will be there for a few days and feel especially intense.

Remember that even though this retrograde arc is from August 4 through September 30, it is most intense when Mercury is retrograde between August 23 and September 15. When Mercury stations retrograde it will join the current retrograde parade, which includes Venus, Saturn, Neptune, and Pluto. This will start the next two months of 5 and 6 planets going retrograde, which simply means that things may slow up and projects and plans will not get finished as quickly. When Uranus stations retrograde on August 29, there will be 6 planets that are retrograde and that lasts until September 15, when Mercury stations direct and 5 planets will still be retrograde. Even when Venus stations direct on September 4, Jupiter will then station retrograde on that same day so there will still be 6 retrogrades between August 29 (when Uranus stations retrograde) and September 15 (when Mercury stations retrograde). What to expect during this coming Mercury retrograde? You may have begun to feel some of the effects once it entered the retrograde arc (shadow) on August 4. Remember that during these times even little annoyances can interfere with our usual schedules, plans, and even emotions, so it is most important that at the moment, you prepare yourself by doing any mental or physical exercise that helps you stay calm and focused. Do not get rattled by little things since you can easily turn something minor into something major. If you suspect your devices are acting funny, or slowing up, do not wait until they break down, but give them a check-up. If a project gets delayed, then just call up your patience since getting flustered and impatient are not going to change the situation, but your attitude will. And if communication with someone close to you turns into disagreement, just pull away and change the subject. A lot less will get resolved Mercury retrograde, and if you have any planets, points or angles in between the retrograde arc, you are especially affected between August 4 and September 30. Remember that what I mention here is not going to be as intense during the retrograde arc period, but really applies to the actual retrograde from August 23 through September 15.

The Mercury retrograde period means that if you keep on top of things, and tackle them before they occur, Mercury retrograde will not be that awful. Mercury Retrograde always brings the same general uneasiness, even though much of it is unwarranted. Sure, there will be the mild annoyances and disruptions, which may include communication snafus, scheduling conflicts, misunderstandings, and transportation slowdowns, and if you are prepared and figure these things are possible, they will not throw you off your center when they occur. You might find this particular retrograde more frustrating than usual because there will be five retrograde planets and from August 29-September 15 there will be six.

Remember to think before you speak, do not overreact to what others say and do, and refrain from juggling your usual array of activities. Mercury multitasks well when it moves forward at a steady pace, and not when it appears to slow up, which is what retrogrades are all about. Retrogrades are a great time to look inward and revise and fix something you have previously worked on since once it goes direct you will be able to move forward with something new that you have incorporated in a project, relationship, move, or just with your own appearance, attitudes, and goals. Be quiet, meditate, and look inside. Be more alert than usual, develop more patience, and generally take things slower. Look inward and you will be able to problem solve. Retrogrades are always a time for reflection and revision. 

Read if you use Indian sidereal astrology. If you have a planet, point, or angle in your chart between 13° Leo 54’ and 27° Leo 45' where Mercury retrogrades, this is what may be slowed down, reviewed, revised, and ultimately reinvigorated and reinvented during this retrograde arc period of August 4-September 30.

Sun. power, vigor; Moon. maternal, mind; Mars. strength, courage; Mercury. speech, learning; Jupiter.  knowledge, wealth; Venus. love, happiness; Saturn. sorrow, fear; Rahu. intensity, compulsion; Ketu. extremes, spirituality; Lagna. destiny, vitality. If you want to use Uranus, Neptune, Pluto, and the angles you can look below at tropical Western astrology for their keywords.

Mercury stays in Leo from July 25th through October 2nd. The house that sidereal Leo occupies is the area that may be slowed down, reviewed, revised, and ultimately reinvigorated and reinvented. If you do not know which house sidereal Leo occupies, look at your ascendant, or Moon, or even your Sun (if you do not know your ascendant or Moon), and just count from there. General descriptions for bhavas (houses) are as follows:  

1. appearance, destiny, temperament, personality, constitution; 2. Money, family life, food, speech, early childhood; 3. Siblings, Fine arts, courage, desires; 4. Mother, happiness, real estate, vehicles; 5. Children, romance, investments, speculation; 6. Open enemies, work, competition, obstacles, illness; 7. Marriage, partners, contracts, passion; 8. Life and death cycle, research, accidents, other's money, inheritance; 9. Father, teacher (guru), religion, higher learning, opportunity; 10. Career, status, public recognition, reputation; 11. Profits, rewards, gains from work, awards, older siblings; 12. spiritual practice, secret enemies, foreign travel, debt, confinement.
