The National Science Foundation’s program for Biology Integration Institutes supports diverse and collaborative teams of researchers investigating questions that span multiple disciplines within and beyond biology. The goal is to stimulate creative integration of disparate fields using innovative experimental, theoretical, and modeling approaches to discover underlying principles operating across multiple levels of life.

The University Research Compliance Office, or URCO, has some exciting news! For the annual Public Health Service Financial Conflict of Interest, or PHS FCOI, Data Call, we have updated the submission process to an online software solution called IRBManager. IRBManager is a configurable software system that has allowed K-State’s forms and workflow to be incorporated into an online submission and approval process.
IRBManager can be accessed on the URCO website. Next week we will email all investigators who have applied for or received any PHS funding with instructions on how to complete the annual data call. Remember, all PHS-sponsored investigators are required to complete annual PHS FCOI reporting. This is separate from the annual K-State Conflict of Interest reporting that is done on HRIS.
Open forums/training sessions via zoom will be offered the first week of October, see dates below. If you’re interested in attending any of the sessions, please register to attend. Zoom details will be sent to registrants one day prior to the session.

NIH has recently begun requesting information beyond current/pending research funding to be included in the Other Support section of NIH proposals. This includes all financial and in-kind support, as well as consulting agreements that pertain to the research. PreAward Services has developed a fillable form to assist researchers in meeting this requirement. Learn more at this session.

Identifying Graduate Fellowship Opportunities Information Session |

The K-State Graduate School, the Office of Nationally Competitive Scholarships and the Office of Research Development are hosting an Information Session on Identifying Graduate Fellowship Opportunities. This session will provide an overview of key graduate fellowship opportunities from funders such as NSF, NIH, DoD, DoE, Hertz Foundation, and the American Association of University Women. Opportunities in the Humanities and Social Sciences will also be specifically addressed. The session will conclude with a brief tutorial on how to search for fellowships on your own.

This a notice for groups to start thinking about the next NSF EPSCoR Track 2 submission round. These proposals are typically due in late January with an LOI due in mid-December. This is also a limited submission program with internal notification likely due to K-State’s Office of Research Development near the end of October when NSF anticipates the new Request for Proposals will come out.
The National Science Foundation’s EPSCoR Track 2 builds inter-jurisdictional collaborative teams of EPSCoR investigators in scientific focus areas consistent with NSF priorities. Projects are investigator-driven and must include researchers from at least two EPSCoR eligible states with complementary expertise and resources necessary to address challenges, which neither party could address as well or rapidly independently. There is a good chance the focus area for this next round will be “Advancing research towards Industries of the Future to ensure economic growth for EPSCoR jurisdictions” because NSF typically keeps an EPSCoR Track 2 focus area for two years and last year was the first year for this focus area. However, looking at last year’s RFA will be helpful because this program has a strong emphasis on developing a diverse, well-prepared, STEM-enabled workforce necessary to sustain research competitiveness and requires a workforce development plan as part of the submission.

The National Institutes of Health awarded nearly $470 million to build a national study population of diverse research volunteers and support large-scale studies on the long-term effects of COVID-19. The NIH REsearching COVID to Enhance Recovery (RECOVER) Initiative made the parent award to New York University (NYU) Langone Health, New York City, which will make multiple sub-awards to more than 100 researchers at more than 30 institutions and serves as the RECOVER Clinical Science Core. nih.gov
Research articles in the life sciences are more ambitious than ever. The amount of data in high-impact journals has doubled over 20 years2, and basic-science papers are increasingly expected to include evidence of how results will translate to clinical applications. An article in a journal such as Nature thus ends up representing many years of work by several people. nature.com
One of the first executive orders that President Biden signed on advancing racial equity acknowledges that “advancing equity requires a systematic approach to embedding fairness in decision-making processes.” It exhorts government agencies to “recognize and work to redress inequities in their policies and programs that serve as barriers to equal opportunity.” insidehighered.com
One of the success stories in modern science is the emergence of a fledgling industry exploiting the weird and wonderful properties of the quantum world. This industry is developing technologies, devices and services based on quantum cryptography, quantum metrology, quantum computing and other properties of the quantum world. discovermagazine.com
Scientists and forecasters who study the connection between climate change and extreme weather say the rapid rates of sea-level rise are accelerating the frequency and intensity of severe weather events—like hurricanes, heat waves and more.
