Greetings, friends and neighbors,

This week, I traveled along with other Oregon Republicans to Arizona to assess the situation at the U.S. southern border.

On the trip, we were briefed by Arizona leaders at the Capitol in Phoenix and at the border in Yuma. In Yuma, we toured the border: sections of wall that were secure, sections that were wide-open with only a “no trespassing” sign, and tunnels. We also visited the local hospital and a family advocacy center.

Read on to learn more about the border, how it affects Oregonians, and what we can do.

THE BORDER

Drug trafficking and human trafficking continue unabated at our southern border.

Drug trafficking

According to the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration: “Fentanyl is the greatest threat facing Americans today. It is the leading cause of death for Americans between the ages of 18 and 45.” Last year, the DEA seized enough Fentanyl to kill every American. We were briefed that 75% of Fentanyl comes through the Arizona border.

Human trafficking

The situation is grim. It is estimated that at least 10 million unvetted foreign nationals have crossed our border since Joe Biden took office in January 2021. Children are being separated from their families. Unspeakable atrocities are taking place, even after migrants make it into the United States. Illegal aliens cost U.S. taxpayers more than $150 billion dollars per year. Per year. The national security risk of the open border is incalculable.

BEYOND THE BORDER

CBP One Mobile App

During our briefing, we learned more about Customs and Border Protection's "mobile app." Insufficient 72-hour background checks. Court dates as far out as 2040. Illegal aliens are being flown into America's interior. The Biden Administration is bringing the border crisis to airports across America, including PDX.

Pro-Hamas immigrants

While we were touring the border, another immigration news story broke. The Biden Administration is reportedly now considering bringing Gazans into the United States. That's right, friends. Gazans. So many questions. Don't Gazans support Hamas terrorism? Have we have forgotten 9/11? And what the heck was the point of the Patriot Act, anyway?

SALEM, ORE.

Oregon’s “sanctuary state” status and soft-on-crime policies make it one of the most friendly states to human trafficking and drug trafficking, encouraging even more illegal crossings at our southern border.

Sanctuary state

Oregon became a “sanctuary state” in 1987, with the passage of House Bill 2314. The law prohibits state resources from being used to assist U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.

In 2018, Oregon voters rejected a ballot measure opportunity to reverse Oregon’s sanctuary state law. Powerful far-left groups with millions of dollars of out-of-state money mobilized, and the measure was defeated.

In 2021, the Oregon Democrats passed House Bill 3265, giving illegal aliens full benefits in Oregon. Recently, Oregon spent $29 million for a “welcome hotel” and authorized another $2 million in “newcomer” services during the 2024 legislative session.

Soft on crime

2021 was also the year Oregonians passed Measure 110 legalizing hard drugs such as Fentanyl, throwing gasoline on the fire at the U.S. southern border. Cities on the Interstate 5 corridor such as Grants Pass have been particularly hard hit.

The partial reversal of Measure 110 passed during the 2024 legislative session provides little relief. An amendment to the bill, which would have allowed ICE to be notified when drug dealers are arrested, was blocked by Democrats in the legislature.

Where things stand

Oregon’s drug, crime, and housing crises all stem in part from our wide-open southern border. This can only end when we get rid of our failed liberal leadership and elect principled Republicans.

Although Oregon is not a border state, Oregon state lawmakers must respond to the crisis at the U.S. southern border with legislation to ensure we are not encouraging illegal immigration and thus complicit in crimes such as human trafficking and drug trafficking.

Next steps

I will be introducing legislation in the next session to protect Oregonians. Measure 110 must be fully reversed. Legislation such as House Bills 2314 and 3265 which encourage illegal immigration and human suffering, must be fully reversed.

THE SITUATION

The southern border. The drug, crime, and housing crises. The CBP One Mobile App. Gaza. Salem. Serious problems, friends. Now's the time for new leadership. Now's the time to Vote Red. Now's the time to get involved!

Sincerely,
