Hike at Glen Run Nature Preserve
On Saturday, January 30th, we bundled up for a guided morning hike at Glen Run Nature Preserve, led by PHLT's Stewardship Manager Matt Schultz. Our small but adventurous group scouted for animal tracks in the snow, listened to the sounds of winter songbirds, and learned the identifying characteristics of many new trees and shrubs. A bright blue January sky provided a striking backdrop to our lovely view of Cherry Valley and Delaware Water Gap from the ridgetop. As we descended upon the pond, a fantastic laser-like sound eminated from the ice as it shifted beneath the warming sun.
Venturing north on the preserve, we then discovered the snow-covered ruins of Churleigh Inn.
... Have you seen the ruins of Churleigh Inn?
The Churleigh Inn once stood at the top of Godfrey Ridge, overlooking the borough of Stroudsburg below. Originally built as a summer home for art dealer Samuel Collins, his mysterious misfortunes led him to later open the home as an inn, which became a hub for jazz, art, and lavish recreation.

Many questions still remain regarding the life, death, and "curse" of its founder, Samuel Collins. This 2015 article from Pocono Record explores what is known about the curious Stroudsburg character.
All that remain of Churleigh Inn are the foundations of the home, outbuildings, and swimming pool, and the grand marble staircase that once led to the entrance of the Inn. Explore this remarkable piece of Stroudsburg history when you visit PHLT's Glen Run Nature Preserve!

BCHC Eagle Talk with Pocono Avian Research Center
On February 1st, 2020, Darryl and Jackie Speicher of PARC (now part of PHLT) shared their eagle-watching expertise at this standing-room-only event at Brodhead Creek Heritage Center. After the great response to this event in 2020, we hope to invite you all for another eagle talk again next year!

February is a great time of year to look for eagles. Bare-branched trees of winter make the birds easier to spot, and now is the time when eagle pairs work together to rebuild or build new nests--a truly spectacular sight.
The nesting pair of eagles at Brodhead Creek Heritage Center will be starting to settle in again soon. Bring your binoculars, and keep a lookout in the coming weeks for activity in the nest! Eaglets usually hatch around the first week of April, and stay in the nest until mid-June.

If you spot the eagles, or have any birding questions, feel free to contact us at info@phlt.org
