10:00am ONSITE and on Zoom and Facebook Live

“Atheist and Freethinkers Service”

with the Atheists and Freethinkers Group

As a Unitarian Universalist, would you consider yourself, perhaps more accurately, Atheist, Agnostic, Humanist, Secular, Realist, Freethinker, or Seeker? Today we will present you with presentations from some of your own flock who enjoy exploring our world from a combination of all of these perspectives. They invite your attention and openness to considering your own spiritual selves, as they describe a bit of their own journeys.

Your monetary gifts sustain our beloved community and enable us to further embody our values through our gatherings, programs, and community outreach. Please consider UUCLB in your charitable gifts for 2023-2024.

Questions? Email the team at: DemocracyTeam@UUCLB.org

Unitarian Universalists for Social Justice's Democracy Movement is composed of individuals and groups that are concerned about the current state of our country and our democracy, and want to make things better. It is not a political party. Independents, Republicans, Democrats, and individuals who dislike and don't want to participate in politics, are all invited to participate in this movement.

The Democracy Movement's goal is to create a society where everyone's basic needs are met, and people have the opportunity to grow and thrive. If you believe that:

  • There is too much money in the hands of too few people
  • All people are created equal and should have equal rights
  • There is power in coming together in support of a common goal
  • We need to stop being polarized - we are all different, that's ok - most of us have a lot in common - we need to discuss and understand our differences, not fight over them
  • People should be encouraged to vote and make their voices heard
  • Although flawed, democracy is still a better system of government than autocracy / authoritarianism / fascism.

Then you should consider supporting the Democracy Movement. Here are two things you can do: (1) Find and join a local group that supports democracy, (2) Use this link http://bit.ly/uusjelection2024 to download Your Personal Plan to Help Save Our Democracy, select some items, then select some more (3) UUCLB's Saving Democracy Team meets the 2nd Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m. via Zoom. Join us. Email: DemocracyTeam@UUCLB.ORG to be put on our e-list to receive updates.

Statement of Purpose

Awaken people to their power in social justice

LA Voice “Listening Campaign” & “Home is Sacred” Narrative has resulted in SB567 and SB 4 being Signed into Law in 2023 – Thank you for supporting this effort:

  • Listening to our Congregants
  • Postcards & Letters
  • Local Interfaith Community Gatherings on Zoom and In Person
  • Rally at the Capital in Sacramento
  • Meetings with our State Representatives & Senators, Long Beach Mayor
  • News Conferences with the Press
  • Rally celebration: our petitions of 400K plus signatures achieved the first citizens coalition led ballot measure A on the November 2024 Ballot 5/7/2024

The effort for Economic Justice began in 2022. We learned that non-profit entities can lawfully inspire and support legislation that reflects our values. We (the PICO - Interfaith Communities Organizing - Network) were featured in the New York Times. LINK https://www.nytimes.com/2024/04/27/business/affordable-housing-religious-organizations.html

If you submitted a postcard with us after service or at a picnic last year - this is your achievement SB 4! SB Means State Senate Bill.

Through our individual and together efforts - We have collected signatures to put measure A on the ballot in November 2024- Thank you ! LA County Sales, a portion of the sales tax, funds services for mentally ill and low income housing development. We build a coalition around common interests and Values in our local community and in California.

There is a lot more to do this year – Come to the next local organizing meeting to learn more and collaborate with Cesar Castrejon our LA Voice professional organizer. He connects us to Long Beach St Lukes, Grace UNC, Revive Church, Long Beach Church of Christ, Los Angeles - Dolores Mission (Homeboys industries), First UU Church of Los Angeles, Church, and has connections with SUJE, ACCE, LIBRE who support Economic Justice and fair housing for all.

Through the Senate and the Assembly, through the ups and downs, grounded by our faith, and our conviction to build an LA county, and a California with equity and abundance for all.

Extra Parking for CHURCH SERVICES (Sundays only)

Our East and West Parking lots are now at capacity. That is good news; people are finding us! For overflow parking on Sundays, extra parking is available in the Los Altos Medical center Lot at 1777 N Bellflower Blvd. We urge anyone who can to come a little early to park in the Los Altos Medical Center Lot. This will make us more welcoming to newcomers who can find space in our more accessible lots. Directions to the overflow parking lot:

  • From the West on Atherton pass the church lots and turn right into the alley after the apartments.
  • From the North on Bellflower take a right into the Medical Center entrance just after the Arco Station.
  • From the South on Bellflower, a long left turn lane makes for an easy left turn into Los Altos Medical Center Parking.

Social Justice Collection

May 2024

The Filipino Migrant Center

The Filipino Migrant Center was formed in Long Beach in 2010 to address the needs of Filipinos in the region. They are a Filipino-immigrant led organization aiming to educate, organize, and mobilize low-income, working class Filipino families.

FMC is working to develop long-term strategies to change systems of inequality. They provide resources and trainings to the people who are most affected and impacted by social injustices, and they are the leaders in these efforts who the FMC helps to empower. Their programs and services support low-income youth, low-wage workers, immigrant women, and families to improve the conditions of their health, schools, workplaces, neighborhoods, and environment.

This is accomplished with free services such as legal assistance with labor and immigration issues, health clinics, know your rights trainings, and even a walking club.

The FMC also worked collaboratively to produce a documentary on three Filipino immigrants. You can see the trailer at https://www.filipinomigrantcenter.org/liwanag.

They welcome volunteers! Learn more at https://www.filipinomigrantcenter.org/.

Our social justice collection takes place on the second Sunday, but you can support the Filipino Migrant Center until the last Sunday of the month, by mail, text, or online. If by mail, note “Social Justice Collection” on your check, and send it to UUCLB, 5450 E. Atherton St., Long Beach, CA 90808. Using Text-to-Give, text the words “25 Special Collection” and the amount to 833-931- 1845. To give $25, for example, text “25 Special Collection $25.” To cover any convenience fees for the church, you can add the word “cover” (so “25 Special Collection $25 cover”) or simply text “Cover fees on” to cover fees on all text gifts.
