MECK Pre-K Now Taking Applications for the 2022-2023 School Year

MECK Pre-K is now taking applications for the 2022-23 school year. Space is limited, so families are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. To apply, children must be four years old on or before August 31 and live in Mecklenburg County.

MECK Pre-K is a high-quality, free pre-K program funded by Mecklenburg County and administered by Smart Start of Mecklenburg County. MECK Pre-K classrooms are located at 40 child development centers across the county. Families can select their preferred locations when applying.

“MECK Pre-K has continued to serve the four year olds of Mecklenburg County throughout the last two very uncertain school years," says Chief Early Education Officer Mary-Margaret Kantor, Ed.D. "Thanks to the in-person instruction we were able to provide, MECK Pre-K students are prepared to enter kindergarten with the self-confidence and skills needed to help them be successful."

As MECK Pre-K enters its fifth year, the program will welcome more than 1,800 new children and families from all parts of the county into its classrooms for another exciting and growth-filled year.

Families can apply online using a computer, tablet or smartphone at MeckPrek.org. Families can also apply in person or request a paper application. MECK Pre-K staff can be reached by email at info@meckprek.org or by calling 704-943-9585.

MECK Pre-K was created in 2018 to improve access to quality early childhood care and education for children in Mecklenburg County. Decades of research have shown that pre-K makes a difference in the lives of children and their families. The foundation created in a high-quality pre-K program prepares children for the demands of life - not just in the short-term as they succeed in school, but also in the long-term as they grow up, become employed, and contribute to the strength of the community.

In the coming months MECK Pre-K will host registration events and have a presence at local community festivals. Details will be sent out via email, highlighted on social media and posted on MeckPrek.org. Families can text MeckPreK to 22828 to subscribe to MECK Pre-K emails.

MECK Pre-K requires certain documents to verify eligibility. Visit MeckPrek.org and click on “Enrollment” for more information. Registration is not complete until all documentation has been verified. Families will receive an email or letter notifying them when their child is officially accepted into MECK Pre-K.
