"Whether you agree or not, a heavy reliance on electronics drastically reduces the instinctual aspects of the game – a critical trait that separates so many pros."

- Bernie Schultz talkin'. Fwiw I agree and disagree. I agree that it takes away the use of some instincts, but I really do believe and have seen that it also creates new instincts.

β€Š

"They limited us to how many hooks we can throw. Limit us to how many transducers we have."

- Jacob Powroznik talkin' on Dave Mercer's talkin' show. The # of hooks refers to the A-rig and to things like the double Fluke rig.

He also said in there that he fishes a clear, deep private pond. FFS was real effective but now:

> "We've been so much and have caught 'em with that FFS...now when I ping on 'em...they run like there's a pack of dogs on 'em."

This is innerestin' too:

> "...why is it so good and what are they [younger guys good with FFS] doing different. They not doing anything different than what we were doing back in the day. Instead of fishing all the good-looking stuff, they're fishing all the bad-looking stuff where nobody's fishing, like we did back in the day."

"I could see close to 40 fish bigger than 4 lbs swimming around the concrete block."

- This was a dream I had and it was great til I realized it was just a dream. Lol just messin' – that's Lake of the Ozarks 3-day BFL winner Eli Brumnett of OK talkin'. He won the deal with 15 for 49-14:

> "I only got to pre-fish for the tournament for 2 hours. I made about 100 casts and I only had 1 or 2 bites.

> "I started out the tournament Thursday with only two 2-lbers until about 11:00. I idled to the back of a pocket and noticed a cluster of concrete around a marina dock on my Garmin LiveScope. I...turned around and made 3 casts to it, and caught a 5-09 and two 4.5-lbers.

> "After I caught those three big ones, I knew I was going to win the tournament. I could see close to 40 fish bigger than 4 lbs swimming around the concrete block."

> ...the large, boat-length concrete blocks needed to have shad around them to hold the bigger bass he was seeking, and he threw a homemade 3/4-oz living rubber gp jig with a gp Strike King Rage Craw trailer, as well as a 1/2-oz Greenfish Tackle Jig and Rage Craw, both in gp.

B.A.S.S. goes all in on the Opens

Very smart move:

> ...announced increased payouts and widely expanded coverage for 2024.

> Live coverage from all 9 Bassmaster Opens will be streamed on Bassmaster.com, with expanded coverage for the 2024 season on FS1, FS2, Tubi [Tubby? 😁] and the Fox Sports digital platforms.

> ...nearly 1 mil fans tuning in to live final-day broadcasts of 3 Opens tournaments on FS1 in 2023....

> Also beginning in 2024, Bassmaster Opens Elite Qualifiers Division anglers will be competing for a combined Angler of the Year purse of $110,000, which includes an increased 1st-place cash prize of $45,000. The prize payouts for every tournament will also increase, with the top 45 anglers – 1 in 5 competitors – in each event earning a check.

My 2c on why it's very smart:

1. A bunch of MLF pros are at a crossroads right now and this coverage should help them sponsor-wise if they decide to take the Opens road.

2. B.A.S.S.'s primary strength has always been media. So with this move they are going with their strength and staying in their lane = smart...BUT there's also a bunch of $$ that can be made outside of their lane, that then could be used to eventually zero entry fees on the Elites. This could be possible for MLF too....

3. The 9-event Elite qualifying route has been a good move for them and maybe – maybe – is smarter than even they realized it would be.

4. This could solidly solidify (solidly solidify??) the Opens as something much more than they had been. Being a little vague on purpose but pretty sure you see it....

This deal almost makes me think someone at B.A.S.S. is a cutthroat competitor! Now who would that be...πŸ€”

What I learned 'n saw at Guntersville

The folks at GSM (Yamamoto, Big Bites, Buckeye, etc) had a bunch of pros and media types at Gville this week, and as always when that kinda bunch gets together it's a good time. A little bummed not to get to fish with everyone – including ol' buds like Gerald Swindle and John Murray – but it was great to get some time in the boat with David "not Doomsday no mo" Mullins and 3 guys I've never been in the boat with before: Matt Becker, Will "B2B" Davis Jr and Laker Howell (Randy's son).

Here's some tiddybits from the deal, more in future Blasters. Gotta say too – real impressed with the "rookies." Good guys, smart and intense, as I would expect because they're all thataway. But also real knowledgeable, real polished on camera. Couple comments on 'em:

Will Davis Jr – Humble and polite just like he seems, but also has a great sense of humor. Prediction: One reason he will win more tourneys is because most bass fishermen are in the dark about just how good a scrounger rig really is, let alone having it dialed like he does. Vid rundown on that coming soon.

Matt Becker – Intelligent, organized, girlfriend Bittany's last name is Bass, which according to the MLF rules is legal: Nothing says you can't get help from a bass. πŸ˜†

Laker Howell – Not surprised he can talk and does great on camera because his dad is the same way. HOWEVER he doesn't look anything like Randy (lol – same deal with my son man!). Love to see a fishing guide trying to make it, reminds me of guys like Nixon, Clunn, etc.

For all my bros 'n sisters in Christ, all the above guys are bros too. Feeshn tidbits, no particular order:

1. Soon I'll have a total rig rundown vid with Will about the scrounger (Davis Baits Shaky Fish) – that thing looked insanely good in the water. In the vid he talks about why guys might have been turned off by this rig and why we should not be! Swimbait is a 4" Big Bite Jerk Minnow:

2. Will loves him some crazy jig colors: 😁

Lol I think it was only 2 colors!

3. Here's Will's battery/charge setup fyi. Mentioned it before but didn't have pics:

4. Another shot of that "peacock" spotted bass skirt color from Davis Baits:

5. Even tho this looks staged, Matt and I legit doubled up on a couple decent schoolers with the new/not out yet Bill Lewis Hammer Trap – which we both threw for the first time and it was catchin' 'em!

6. Here's a closeup of the bait – hits hard and has a "tri-frequency" sound to attract fish, will be available in 5/8 and 3/8:

7. Seemed like this time of year on Gville, if you weren't getting bit it was time to move til you found 'em. Duh but the whole lake looks so good. Reminded me of FL – looks like fish should be everywhere but they weren't.

8. For a smaller bladed jig profile, he trims the skirt to the bend of the hook and adds the smaller 3" Yamamoto Zako. Says the smaller size lets that bait hunt:

9. The Matt-designed FishUSA exclusive Yamamoto color "Becker's grape juice" looks insanely good in person and in the water – this is the 3" Yammy Shad Shape Worm:

10. Tip from Laker: For more bites wacky-rigging, he sometimes puts a rattle in a 5" Senko – in the middle so when you jerk the bait, it rattles. Vid coming soon....

11. He swears the Livingston JerkMaster jerkbait – designed by Hank Cherry when he was with Livingston – sometimes outcatches other jerkbaits because it makes that baitfish sound (or whatever) on the pause.

12. Thanks to Laker I had another "blind squirrel" moment – and man, even though I was in boats with hammers, it was a big difference in his boat because he KNOWS that lake in all seasons:

13. GTO (Guntersville Tackle and Outdoors) has a GREAT bait selection, and the owners are good folks:

14. Ever hear of Thump Gel? New to me:

Wanna mention that I saw a new Yamamoto bait prototype that in my 2c is a winner. They asked me not to talk about it....

Big thank you to the GSMers, and AL and Gville. Don't think I've been to that lake since Randy won the Classic there. SO much grass, so many healthy fish, so many bass boats – any bass-head who goes there, it'll feel like home. No wonder so many guys move there. Loved it!

News

1. Brett Hite is doing okay after a real scary bird hit.

In that IG vid ^ he says that on day 1 of the WON Bass US Open a bird hit him as he was running full speed:

> "Everything's good with my eye, it's just gonna take some time to heal."

Take er easy man! Prayer folks, please pray for his eye to come back 100% as expected.

2. Paul Elias is 1st bass fisherman ever in MS Sports Hall of Fame.

I think the induction will be in 2024? Congrats man!

> ...Elias began tournament fishing as a pro in 1979 and still competes today. In 1982, Paul won the B.A.S.S. Master's Classic in Montgomery, AL. In 2008, he set a record that still stands today for the largest 4-day 5-bass limit...132 lbs 8 oz on Lake Falcon in TX.

> Over his career, he has won 6 tournaments and had over 50 top 10 finishes. Paul is considered one of the top innovators and technicians in bass fishing.

Another guy going in with him is Eli Manning so...!

3. Mark Rose is in the West Memphis Athletics HOF.

Dang straight! Congrats!

4. Jay Przkeurat uses 3 different leaders for smallmouths.

All Seaguar fluoros (IG vid ^):

- 12-lb Gold Label for Damikis and other baits off the bottom

- 10-lb Tatsu for horsing dropshot fish

- 8-lb Tatsu when the fish aren't biting a dropshot well

5. Carl Jocumsen likes a swivel and snap for glide baits.

Swivel stops the line from twisting and snap allows max action from the bait. Also says fish it SLOOOOW with long pauses. From a good YT vid on gliding in cold water.

6. MLF BPTer Jacob Wall gets Duckett.

Word is they were looking for another Jacob W...😁 Just messin'!

7. Potomac 'Yota winner weighted his frowg.

FL's Christian Greico last month:

> "I caught 9 of the 10 fish I weighed with the punching rig. However, I also caught a key 4-lber on a hollow-body frog that I weighted with a couple of Epic 6mm Tungsten Beads. The added weight helps get the frog deeper into the mat, making a more defined trail in the vegetation...also give the frog a little rattle as it moves across the mat, which helps the bass find it easier...."

8. 2024 NPFL schedule is out.

9. TX: Bass Champs big bass deal on Fork won with...

...a Berkley Blade Spinnerbait. 8.67 caught by OK's Collin Carroll.

10. TX: 8th Annual Fish For A Cure next weekend on Ray Hubbard.

11. TX: Petition to deepen/open the ramp at Decker.

Apparently the ramp had been open even though the water was low, now closed for no good reason. Let's get the bureaucrats to move on it peeps!

12. Does your frog sparkle?

Reminder about the BOOYAH Pad Crasher frog in "disco ball":

Here's Jason Christie talkin' 'bout it on YT.

13. Good detailed rundown of the Rapala CrushCity baits.

By MLF media guy Jody White who won like 10 tournaments this year including an Open so his bassin' bona fides are bona fide!

14. PA: Convicted walleye cheater now facing hunting charges.

According to the article:

> ...Cominsky had 5 illegally harvested antlered deer heads mounted on his wall, some with tags of a person who said they had never killed a deer, according to a criminal complaint in the case.

> Cominsky was convicted in 2023 of using weights to make walleye fish he caught heavier during a tournament in Cleveland to win a cash prize. He and his co-conspirator were sentenced in May 2023 to 10 days in jail, had their fishing licenses suspended for 3 years, and Cominsky had to give up a bass boat worth $100,000. They also have to serve a year and a half probation.

15. New Garmin Echomap Ultra 2 units.

New features:

> Wireless Networking: Share sonar, waypoints and routes with another Echomap Ultra 2 or Echomap UHD2...reducing the need to drill extra holes in the boat....

> Position Accuracy: Multi-band GPS technology with fast 10Hz updates...improved position accuracy, which can benefit anglers particularly in areas like under bridges, along bluffs or in coves with tree cover.

> Screen Recording: Using the ActiveCaptain app, capture what's on the chartplotter screen, including fish catches seen on LiveScope sonar....

> Ease of Use: ...modernized operating system with updated graphics, menus and a new homepage

Available in 10" and 12".

16. CT: Grass carp removal at Candlewood is helping...

...plant regrowth. This line is lol:

> Candlewood Lake was stocked with thousands of sterile triploid grass carp in 2015 and 2017 in an effort to combat Eurasian watermilfoil. But the fish wound up eating more than just that invasive weed....

Doh!

17. Is "big Ag" mostly to blame for lower CO River flows?

...north of Okeechobee. Here's one suggested comment: "It better have a huge boat ramp and parking lot!" πŸ˜†

19. TX: It's Falcon Lake dam's 70th anniversary...

...and the water is about as low as it's ever been...and the bass are still huge and crazy I hope! #bucketlist

20. Shimano fishing sales up 3.4% over 9 months...

...year over year BUT were down 3.4% just for Q3. Overall Shimano was way down due to the cycling stuff.

21. A Big Mouth Billy Bass was in Buckingham Palace??

Says so in a post about BMBB being used in a billboard campaign over there.

Lines of the Day

The deeper bite 15-20' of water – Texas rig, Carolina rig or crankbait, the color does not matter.

From a Toledo Bend fishing report. Color doesn't matter??

Travel is one of the most environmentally taxing and expensive industries in the world....

So now TRAVEL is bad for the environment? πŸ™„ So I guess "eco tourism" is now no bueno? From a post trying to say how cool Facebook's virtual goggles world can be. No thanks mang!

Tip of the Day

Wake baits are underrated fall topwaters?

So weird because the other day I wanted to tie one on but didn't. From the MLF site, Ott DeFoe and Scotty Suggs:

> Ott: "It's one of the easiest topwater baits to fish and it's one of the less-fished ones."

> ...key is finding a bait that swims smoothly and creates a wake at their desired speed. For years, Suggs said, he had to tinker with his wakebaits to get them to run properly when retrieved quickly. One reason he loves the [discontinued Strike King] Wake Shad is because it has the swimming action he's looking for right out of the package.... He called it "idiot-proof."

> DeFoe throws his wakebaits on a 6' 8" M rod that he says has some give to it – the same rod he uses for walking topwaters and poppers. Suggs...uses a 7' 1" MH rod. But while DeFoe uses braided line (typically 30-lb), Suggs...usually opts for 14-lb mono but will upsize to 17-lb around heavy cover.

Few good options for the fall might be:

4" FishLab Bio Shad Wakebait

3.75" CatchCo Baby Bull Shad

Rapala "broken back" Jointed Minnow (if you can cast it!)

Cotton Cordell Redfin regular and jointed

Quote of the Day

[Deion] Sanders is an avid bass fisherman and could've likely been part of the Bassmasters tour.

- I'd never bet against that guy in anything, but that's a pretty casual statement man. Its TOUGH to get to the top of bassin'. The fish don't care who you are!
