Renowned architectural historian Professor Andrew Dolkart will lead a faculty-only walking tour of the Upper West Side organized by the Office of Work/Life. The tour will explore the architecture and development of the northern reaches of the Upper West Side focusing on the apartment house development of West End Avenue and the row houses on the side streets. We will discuss the rapid transformation of West End Avenue from an avenue of substantial row houses to a street of upper-middle-class apartments; the development of Riverside Park and Drive; and the construction of some of the last single-family row houses in Manhattan. Who designed the buildings, who built them, and who lived here will be themes throughout the tour. Tour is limited to 25 participants.
