A groundbreaking ceremony for the Skokie Homewood Suites by Hilton took place on 8/11. Representatives from the community, the Village of Skokie, construction management and hotel development noted their visions and contributions.

The development will include -

• 143 rooms, each with a private kitchenette
• 10,000 square foot indoor/outdoor event space with a capacity of 300
• Suites to accommodate long term stays
• A rooftop bar with views of the Chicago Skyline and Lake Michigan
• Pedestrian arcade to highlight the community

On August 17th, tenants and employees of the Illinois Science and Technology Park are invited to learn more and provide input for the Skokie Homewood Suites by Hilton. The open house will be held from 10:45a to 12:30p in the AB Conference Room. at the Park.

The developers are seeking input concerning:
• Proposed usage for business functions, private events and conferences
• Expectation of digital infrastructure required
• Other amenities that would be beneficial

LanzaTech Bacteria Carbon Capture Technology
LanzaTech, has been recycling carbon emissions into products such as clothes, aviation fuel, fragrances, and perfumes.

The patented CarbonSmart technology has shown how its carbon capture and conversion technology can do away with virgin fossil fuels to make things people use in their daily lives.

The major products made by LanzaTech out of its carbon recycling technology include the following:

  • Fuels (SAF)

For every ton of CarbonSmart product made 2 tons of CO2 is removed. The scalable tech has the potential to produce >1 billion tons/year of CarbonSmart products from waste feedstock

LanzaTech’s fermentation process uses rabbit-gut bacteria to ferment gas pollution (contains CO2) captured from factories and municipal solid waste.
The bacteria then transforms those wastes to make its proprietary blend of ethanol it calls Lanzanol. Ethanol is a basic building block of many materials and it’s an alcohol that is blended with gasoline to lessen the fuel used by cars.
LanzaTech’s CEO, Jennifer Holmgren said that steel mills usually flare carbon monoxide (CO) and CO2 into the atmosphere. She noted:

“LanzaTech runs a plant at a steel-mill site, to easily grab the carbon monoxide emissions and put them into a reactor, a process called gas fermentation. Then, a unique strain of bacteria inside the reactor devours the emissions and “poops out ethanol, basically.” Holmgren added, “Fossil fuel is in everything we use, not just fuel or energy… dresses [SAF and other sustainable products] will show people that to decarbonize, we have to change where carbon in everything comes from.”
Cour Pharma Expands at ISTP
To meet the increasing demand for medical research space in the Chicagoland area, Cour Pharmaceuticals' life science and emerging biotechnology footprint is expanding within the Illinois Science and Technology Park in Skokie, Ill. With the addition, Cour Pharmaceuticals now leases around 25,000 sq. ft. in the park.

COUR Pharmaceuticals is developing first-in-class therapies designed to reprogram the immune system to achieve antigen-specific tolerance for immune-mediated disease. COUR's platform of immune-modifying nanoparticles treats the root cause of immune disease, unlike traditional approaches, which only minimize symptoms using toxic immune suppression.
"Continued rapid growth for high-potential life science startups are emerging in Chicago and in addition to talent, life sciences companies like COUR will continue to need access to more specialized wet and dry lab space along with capital," said COUR Pharmaceuticals CEO John Puisis.

Big Thinking at the Nanoscale: IIN Symposium
The 2022 IIN Symposium will, for the first time, exclusively feature luminaries from Northwestern delivering TED-style talks on their research and its impact across areas of importance to everyone. Charles River Laboratories:
CDMOs can help clients smooth commercial cell and gene therapy (CGT) manufacturing demand 
It’s well known in the cell and gene therapy field that demand outstrips supply in the cell and gene therapy manufacturing space. CDMOs can help clients smooth commercial cell and gene therapy manufacturing demand.

Manufacturing is only one part of a CGT therapy’s lifecycle. Discovery, safety assessment, regulatory support, and testing are also required. Companies often outsource to a CRO for much of these ancillary services.

Partnering with a company early that can provide assistance in process development and has experience developing processes with commercialization in mind can offer a significant guiding hand to develop a robust and reproducible process with the proper critical process parameter (CPPs) and critical quality attributes (CQAs). Having this same company involved with your safety testing and release testing provides for a unique synergy for CGT assets creating significant opportunities for time and cost savings.

Charles River Labs is an industry-leading contract development and manufacturing organization (CDMO) that CGT companies depend upon to manufacture their cell and gene therapies for preclinical, clinical, and commercial uses.
Cyclopure Installs DEXSORB System 
Together with AECOM, Cyclopure has installed a DEXSORB packed-bed filtration (PBF) system in California to treat PFAS in AFFF-contaminated groundwater.

The DEXSORB pilot PBF system, configured with two pressurized vessels in lead-lag operation, and a telemetry monitoring system began operation on July 6th.
The skid-mounted system is scheduled to continue operation for six months. The company now has four operating pilots in the U.S., with three more pilot systems planned for installation during the 4th quarter.
