Learn about the 'Battle of Lake Ellyn' SATURDAY

Local historian Ron Aubrey will share the (surprisingly fascinating) story of how Lake Ellyn Park was saved in a presentation at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 25, at the Glen Ellyn Historical Society, 800 N. Main St.

After the grand Glen Ellyn Hotel was struck by lightning and burned down in 1906, the company that owned it tried to sell off the surrounding property to build lakefront homes. Many community members believed the lake should be accessible to all, so they worked together to make the area a public park. It took 14 years, but they eventually succeeded in saving Lake Ellyn Park.

The event is $5 for adults and $3 for members and students. You can click here to learn more.

Be inspired by flowers in bloom at Morton Arboretum's Iris Society Show MONDAY

I think Vincent Van Gogh's paintings of irises are some of the loveliest works of art in the world. (That's one of them at right.) There's something about these boldly colored blooms on their elegant stems that completely captures the beauty of early summer.

You can experience the inspirational beauty of these blooms yourself from noon to 5 p.m. Monday, May 27, at the Iris Society Show at the Morton Arboretum, 4100 Illinois Route 53 in Lisle. In addition to seeing some 100 different irises, you’ll also be able to talk with iris experts from the Northern Illinois Iris Society.

After the show, I hope you'll take a few minutes to explore the nearby Gerard T. Donnelly Grand Garden, which was funded in part by a matching grant from the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity. It's a lovely place, especially at this time of year.
