Pat JaCoby was raised in Pasadena, but spent her childhood summers in Del Mar where her family rented a beachfront cottage. Many years later, armed with fresh journalism degrees from the University of Missouri, Pat arrived in Del Mar to purchase and publish two weeklies - the Del Mar Surfcomber and the Rancho Santa Fe Times.
Pat plunged into volunteer work with the City of Del Mar, serving as chair of the Planning Commission, Design Review Board, Parks and Recreation, and chairing the city's anniversary celebration. She served on the committee to select an architectural firm for the city's new Civic Center and chaired the dedication ceremony which followed its completion. Her journalism work included the Los Angeles Times, the San Diego Union-Tribune, and as Director of Communications at UCSD Medical Center.
Pat's hobbies included the theater (she served as president of the San Diego Theater League) and "off beat" adventures such as painting houses in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, teaching English in Costa Rica, or wind-sailing off the Torrey Pines Cliffs.
Pat served multiple terms on the DMCC Board of Directors, serving in roles such as Publicity Chair, Secretary, and Programs Committee Chair. Many of DMCC's most popular programs were her ideas, and she was a guiding light for staff members.
Pat is survived by her daughter Julie Lambdin and her son Rutherford Scott Johnson. She was predeceased by two husbands, Johnny Johnson and Al JaCoby. She was the oldest sister and the last to pass. Both her mom and dad passed too. She has eight grandchildren and 10 great- grandchildren. She loved being with them and her love for the beach rubbed off on them.
Condolences may be sent to daughter Julie Lambdin. In lieu of flowers, Pat's family asks that gifts in her memory be donated to Del Mar Community Connections.
Remembrance written by Pat JaCoby and shared by Julie Lambdin.
