Remembering Mr. Robert J. "Bill" Fanning |
McNicholas recently learned of
the passing of former teacher Mr. Bill Fanning. Fanning was the first lay teacher hired by the Sisters of St. Joseph for the newly established McNicholas High School in 1951. Fanning spent his career as a life-long Rocket before retiring in 1990. It was in 1990 that the McNicholas Library Media Center was named in Fanning's honor. Fanning's career at McNicholas included teaching English and history and directing numerous musicals.
At the Nov. 25, 1990, dedication of the library, then principal John Laudeman said, "Robert J. Fanning has had an impact on the lives of McNicholas students since 1951. He will always be remembered for his love of American literature and English grammar and for his absorption into politics and government. Many traditions at McNicholas, including Spring Musical and Mardi Gras, find their roots in the creativity of Bill Fanning."
