Dear Terra,

Today marks the 80th anniversary of D-Day, when Allied forces landed on the beaches of Normandy and launched an invasion that would ultimately liberate Western Europe, defeat Nazi Germany, and end World War II.

In honor of their incredible courage, I wanted to share these words from President Biden's statement today:

"As we reflect on the sacrifices made on D-Day, we are reminded that freedom is not free and it has never been guaranteed. Every generation has to earn it, fight for it, and defend it in the battle between autocracy and democracy — between the greed of a few and the rights of many. Eighty years after our Nation’s brave Airmen, Coast Guardsmen, Sailors, Soldiers, and Marines embarked on D-Day — and as Americans everywhere answered the call to prayer and filled their hearts and homes with hope — may we honor the faith they kept in our Nation and their legacy by upholding the future that they died for — one grounded in freedom, democracy, opportunity, and equality for all."

Say hello to our new summer interns!

It's June! That means it's summer intern season at our district office.

To introduce these public-spirited young people to our district, I'm sending them door-to-door to ask you to fill out our 2024 Constituent Survey.

As you'll see, the survey asks about your priorities for the Illinois state budget and for our communities. Your input is so valuable to me as I work for our communities in Springfield, and I greatly appreciate your taking the time to share your thoughts and concerns.

If you're not home during the day (or if you'd rather do this on your own time), you can fill out the survey online. Just click here to get started. Don't worry – it only take a few minutes to complete. I look forward to hearing from you!

Enjoy another summer evening filled with music in Glen Ellyn TOMORROW

There's something so special about sitting outside and enjoying a concert on a summer evening. If you can, I hope you'll kick off your weekend at Downtown Glen Ellyn's Family Friendly Friday Summer Concert, from 5 to 9:45 p.m. tomorrow on Main Street.

Tomorrow's concert features Altered Suburbia, an all-female band (which includes Abraham Lincoln Elementary 3rd-grade teacher Amy Bishop!) and Serendipity, a pop/rock band that plays hits from the '60s, '70s and '80s.

Glen Ellyn restaurants will be serving food and drink to concertgoers, so please do not bring your own. To learn more, you can click here.

Pride Month Spotlight: Ortez Alderson

Ortez Alderson's career as a militant activist stretched from his teens, when he protested the Vietnam War and fought the draft, to his last years as an activist fighting on behalf of people of color with AIDS.

As a young man on Chicago’s South Side, Alderson joined the Chicago Gay Liberation Front and went on to co-found the Third World Gay Revolutionaries, to focus on the specific concerns of Black people in the LGBT community.

In his 20s, Alderson studied acting and appeared in numerous plays in Chicago. In 1981, he moved to New York to continue his acting career. When the AIDS epidemic struck the gay community, Alderson used the skills he had built as an anti-war and gay activist to organize demonstrations to raise public awareness of the devastating disease and to demand government action.

Tragically, Ortez Alderson died of complications from AIDS in 1990, at the age of 38.

In 1991, Alderson was inducted into Chicago’s LGBT Hall of Fame.
