Remembering César Chávez

Born in Yuma, Arizona, on March 31, 1927, César Chávez was an American labor leader and civil rights activist, who co-founded the National Farm Workers Association (NFWA), which later became the United Farm Workers (UFW) labor union. He was a strong believer in the principles of nonviolence and was an avid reader who created his own library in his home. He also had strong connections in San Jose where today, there’s a memorial walkway in his honor.

In 2014, President Barack Obama proclaimed César Chávez Day a U.S. federal commemorative holiday every March 31st in celebration of Chavez’s birthday. In observance of this holiday, all SJPL locations will be closed on Monday, April 1. SJPL’s eLibrary is always open at sjpl.org.
