Ventura, Calif. - The City of Ventura invites community members to actively engage in the Surfers Point Managed Retreat Project by participating in an online survey. This survey will be open until Friday, May 31, 2024, and is available in English and Spanish, providing flexible options for individuals to share their insights and preferences.
Through the online survey, residents and stakeholders can play a pivotal role in shaping the amenities and potential themes of public art at the Surfers Point site, as well as other key aspects of the project.
"We heard from many of our community members who participated in a recent workshop at the Ventura County Fairgrounds," said Mayor Joe Schroeder. "We hope to give the opportunity to others who were unable to attend the meeting in the hopes of gathering diverse perspectives to ensure that this cherished location aligns with the needs and desires of both residents and visitors."
Funded by a $16 million grant from the State Coastal Conservancy, the Surfers Point Managed Retreat Project embodies the City’s commitment to coastal resilience through a comprehensive strategy. In addressing erosion concerns, the project will continue its innovative approach to replacing coastal infrastructure, thereby mitigating the impact of consistent wave action.
Alongside erosion management efforts, the project will feature the creation of a new multi-use path, a parking lot equipped with an attendant station, integration of public art installations, enhanced lighting, drainage improvements, landscaping upgrades, and provision for electric vehicle charging. The incorporation of reconstructed dunes, strategic plantings, and a buried cobble berm will further enhance the site's resilience against coastal erosion.
Building upon a successful initiative completed in 2013, this project reflects a collaborative effort involving the Ventura County Fairgrounds, Ocean Protection Council, State of California Coastal Conservancy, Beach Erosion Authority for Clean Oceans and Nourishment (BEACON), Surfrider Foundation, and other valued partners.
“The City of Ventura remains committed to pioneering coastal restoration efforts, leveraging natural features to fortify our coastline against erosion,” shared Public Works Director Charlie Ebeling. “We are deeply appreciative of the support from our partners in preserving this site for the enjoyment and benefit of future generations.”
