Article: The Relation-Ship Builder
|

John Maxwell has a book called everybody communicates but few connect. When I think of the connection I can't help but to imagine the feeling that goes with it. The feeling that comes when someone gets it right when trying to get their message across to you. They have either taken the time to learn what you like or remembered something you discussed with them. When this happens, that feeling is "wow, they care" and the transition takes place. We ask ourselves how can we help them as a show of sincere gratitude. As you reflect on this emotion, imagine the young people at your school, class or afterschool program feeling like this when we know that they don't get this connection a lot. Building the Relation-Ship creates an active learning culture where instead of the teacher force feeding kids all day they transition to a Dream Building because the ability to learn is extreme when they feel like the person delivering the information cares and shows genuine interest in them. The only thing we can do to help them is guide them through the material and help them to link it to their WHY. If they don't understand the WHY they will not do the work, let me explain. As we get to know people we get familiar with them. Once a young person gets familiar with you then the relationship has to kick in eventually. If you haven't taken the time to build the Relation-Ship then you have never discovered the WHY that makes them tick and they interpret it as YOU DON'T CARE. Yes, no one will ever know because they will act out in your class and you can kick them out and blame it on their parents, culture or lack of a father, but I am LIVING PROOF that good teachers and youth workers can reach a drifting kid if they take the time to make the connection. Once you make the connection you can get them to the SHIP which is the transportation to their destiny. I challenge you today to become a Dream Builder and master the art of the connection. |
