We are excited to announce that registration is now open for the 2020 FH Global Summit! Join us in Philadelphia, PA October 25-26, 2020.

Today, we recap more sessions from the 2019 FH Global Summit in part 3 of our 4-part series. If you missed our previous edition, you can read it  here .
Precision FH Care
In this “most-talked about sessions of the summit,” Drs. Anne Tybjærg-Hansen, Sekar Kathiresan and Eric Sijbrands argued for additional tools to understand the heterogeneity of FH, including LDL polygenic risk scores, multiple “omics” and, once again, the impact that lifestyle, treatment and the environment can have on outcomes.

Key highlights:

  • Polygenic risk score might not be as helpful as the risk score for coronary artery disease

  • Lp(a) should be measured in all individuals with FH, and perhaps all individuals with high LDL-C

  • Need to add more diverse populations to genetic studies
"You can influence your risk by influencing your environment. Don't be afraid of a high-risk score."
– Eric Sijbrands, MD, PhD

"New monogenic genes. I don't believe that for FH."
– Anne Tybjærg-Hansen, MD, DMSc

Global Predictors of FH Care Success
How can we more uniformly treat FH across the world? Increasing knowledge of primary care practitioners was a universal theme highlighted by both Dr. Raul Santos and Dr. Rodrigo Alonso Karlezi. Dr. Santos underscored data from the "10-country study," which showed that, despite half of the world's FH population residing in Asia-Pacific, diagnosis rates significantly trail the United Kingdom. In addition, a significant percentage of individuals fail to meet treatment targets.

Dr. Alonso Karlezi presented new data on “primary care knowledge in the Americas” from the Meeting of America's survey. Initiated at the 2018 FH Global Summit by the FH Foundation and the FH Iberoamericana Network, the survey measured the level of awareness and knowledge in physicians regarding familial hypercholesterolemia in North, Central and South America.
