Registration Time Can Leave Students Frustrated and Disappointed
In the height of summer as registration for fall coursework unfolds, many students find themselves unhappy over the course selection process. They may be hemmed in by placement test results, blocked by enrollment restrictions, not able to get courses they want that have filled up, or forced to settle for courses they don't want or that take place at the crack of dawn or well into the night. Any coach or advisor who has spent time in registration support knows the palpable frustration in the room as students address the multiple barriers to the seemingly "ideal" schedule they have imagined.
As students begin coursework this fall, coaching can help them close the gap between expectation and reality, shifting their gaze from what's missing to what's possible. If you are fortunate to meet with a student early in the semester, and the student shares disappointment with their courses, ask questions like these that illuminate choices and opportunities:
- Let's look at the learning objectives on the syllabus: What seems interesting to explore?
- How might a course provide an opportunity for you to connect with new friends?
- What serves you about the times and locations of your courses through the week?
- When you have a long break between class meetings, how can you take advantage of it, and where can you go to do it?
- What can you do now to make sure you are qualified and ready to enroll next semester in a course you were unable to register for this semester?
- Of your professors, who seems most interesting, and why?
- How can you give yourself a boost when you feel down?
- What do you want to be able to say about yourself at the end of this semester?
