Opioids: A Multifaceted Approach From Tapering and Withdrawal Treatment to Chronic Treatment and Overdose Prevention

This session will explore the opioid epidemic from a variety of aspects. It will begin by discussing strategies for compassionate opioid tapering and the importance of provision of take-home Naloxone. Next, it will review mitigation strategies for opioid withdrawal, including the use of a variety of Alpha-2 (α-2) agonists. Following this, it will explore Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) as a chronic disease and the role and impact of medications for OUD (MOUD) on morbidity and mortality. Finally, it will review emerging concerns including co-occurring Methamphetamine and OUDs and the pervasive fentanyl contamination in nearly all illicit substances being sold as pills or powder. The session will end with a panel discussion including people with substance use lived experience. Time will be allowed for question and answers.

Stephanie Nichols, PharmD, MPH, BCPS, BCPP, FCCP, is an Associate Professor of Pharmacy in the UNE School of Pharmacy, Adjunct Assistant Clinical Professor of Psychiatry in the Tufts School of Medicine, and Core Faculty for the Maine Medical Center/Veteran’s Affairs Addiction Medicine Physician Fellowship Program. She is a Board-Certified Psychiatric Pharmacist and Pharmacotherapy Specialist. She has close to 20 years experience providing direct patient care and inter-professional teaching, including precepting close to 200 students and residents. She has co-authored over 30 publications in journals including Pharmacotherapy, Pain, Current Psychiatry, Journal of Psychopharmacology, Journal of Studies on Alcohol and Drugs, and Psychosomatics.
