Please join us to learn about updates to the Salt Lake Temple.

Significant progress has been made on this project with respect to the new seismic foundations of the historic Temple. In this presentation, a detailed update will convey how the existing stone foundations of the Temple have been consolidated in preparation for the new, deep, and heavily reinforced concrete seismic upgrade.

The focus will be on the installation of 98 base isolators, the large concrete transfer girders that encase the existing foundations, and the role of post-tensioned cables in and through the new and existing foundations, as well as vertically inside the columns of the building. These enhancements are designed to strengthen unreinforced stone walls and transform the historic Temple into a solid edifice capable of moving 5 feet in any direction in the event of a serious seismic event.

Georges studied at the LDS Business College, BYU-Provo and Arizona State University in Tempe, Arizona; graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Construction Engineering in 1977.

His career started as a prestressed/precast concrete quality control technician in Phoenix, Arizona. He then worked as a field engineer at an LNG receiving terminal in Lake Charles, Louisiana. Georges’s employment with the church began as project manager of the Tahiti LDS Temple, followed by Physical Facilities Manager for Western and Eastern Europe, based in Frankfurt, Germany. In addition, he has served over 13 years as Director of Church operations for Africa based in Johannesburg, South Africa and West Africa, based in Accra, Ghana. He currently serves as Director of Communications on the Salt Lake Temple renovation project.

Brent Maxfield, S.E. has 41 years of experience in the field of structural and seismic engineering. Brent graduated Magna Cum Laude with a degree in Civil Engineering from Brigham Young University and received a Master of Engineering Management from the same university. Brent has been employed for almost 32 years as a structural engineer for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints where he has worked on projects across the United States and around the world. Some of his favorite projects include the Salt Lake Temple Renovation and Base Isolation project, the Provo City Center Temple, the Conference Center, the Bishops’ Central Storehouse, and The Hague Netherlands temple, where he served his mission.
