Church Vitality, Thriving Congregations, and Lilly Endowment - Part 2

By: Rev. Christopher B. Morton

Can you tell your church’s story? What is it? Truly, I want to know. Would you describe your church as vital? Does it feed your soul? Does it nurture your faith? Does it challenge your beliefs? Does it provide comfort when you are hurting?

What does it look like when your church is being vital? Does it always have to look like that to be an important part of your life?

Or, would you suggest that your church is stagnant? Do you feel stuck, going nowhere? If so, where would like the church to go? And how would you suggest the church get started moving in that direction? How can you help the church to adapt to the realities that it’s facing and explore a new approach, new ministries, new ways of being church?

Those are the kinds of questions that the Christian Church In Nebraska, in partnership with the Christian Churches in Kansas and Greater Kansas City, will explore with you through the Tri-Regional Partnership. Whether we are successful in securing a grant from the Lily Endowment’s Thriving Congregations’ Initiative, or not, the TRPI is committed to listening to each of you and your thoughts on church vitality

Today, on June 21st, we submit a request to the Lilly Endowment’s Thriving Congregations’ Initiative to further the work that the TRPI began in August 2020. Instead of “telling” churches what you need to do to thrive and be vital, we hope to provide you with places to learn new ways of being church, of engaging with one another in the church, and learning from our failed attempts at vitality. Yes, you read that right – learning from our failed attempts.

In the meantime, if you’d like to learn more about becoming an adaptive culture, and access training in adaptive leadership, please visit the Regional Church’s website --- we have scholarships available right now for you to go to training, on-line or in-person, with the Kansas Leadership Center. We’d love to support a group of 3, or 4, or 5 of you from the church where you worship and serve to attend together and become your own learning cohort within your church.

Christmas in July

One hot summer day... in a place, not so far away... the Disciples of Havelock Christian Church began their version of 'Christmas in July' by taking a loose coin gathering for the benefit of the mission of the Regional Church. What started as a simple kindness has spread to other churches across Nebraska, growing each and every year!

With 5 Sundays coming up in July, we ask that you please consider joining us in starting your own loose change gathering... as the proceeds will go directly to the Regional Church to assist in all the work, from Kamp Kaleo to New Church Development, that is taking place right now across our Region!

  • Nebraska City holds a coin donation competition, with several lucky church members having donation jars in the Narthex through July... whereas the person with the most donations get a friendly 'pie to the face'. It's a fun way to see Rev. Michael Schmidt get pied!
  • Other Congregations select a Sunday in July as their ' Christmas in July' and designate giving on that Sunday.
  • Other ideas are welcomed and encouraged!!

How can we help your Congregation plan for Christmas in July?
