Update

Greetings from the VP,

Do you suffer from the winter blues? This always seems like a busy time in the CTE world with CTE month activities, legislative days, CTSO competitions, not to mention the pressures of day-to-day instruction. Some people’s health is impacted by the length of the day due to less daylight during the winter months. Others just prefer extra light during the day to enjoy activities before and after work hours. Here is the good news, from now (early February) until the end of the school year, we will gain approximately three minutes of daylight every day! So, we will gain nearly an hour by early March and over two hours by the end of March! A 7:30 p.m. sunset sounds pretty good!

Happy CTE Month! If you haven’t made plans to celebrate CTE, the accomplishments of CTE programs, and the importance of CTE for all students of all ages, there is still time! I encourage you to use resources from ACTE and AdvanceCTE to help us generate positive awareness of CTE!

One last thing. Please save the date for our Region III Conference from June 12–14 at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Springfield, Missouri. Final details will be available soon so you can book your room, submit a proposal for a session, or maybe plan a little extra time for your family in the Ozarks for a fun-filled family getaway.

See you soon!

The State of CTE

Illinois — To celebrate and highlight the importance of CTE, student leaders from Illinois CTSOs will present to the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) at the Feb. 15th ISBE Board meeting. They will share how their experience in CTE programs has impacted their lives, the leadership skills they have learned from their respective CTSOs, and the importance of supporting CTE programs. This will be the third consecutive year that CTE students have spoken to ISBE and their testimony has had a positive impact on ISBE’s view of CTE and helped renewed focus on CTE in the Illinois education community.

IACTE will host its 93rd Annual Conference and IACTE Annual Meeting on February 16-17, 2023 at the Bloomington-Normal Marriott Hotel and Conference Center. The theme of the 2023 conference is: Connecting Passion to Opportunity. The conference will feature 75+ breakout sessions and featured speaker, Terry Sumerlin, People Connectors.

IACTE will also host its first CTE Showcase Day since 2019 at the Illinois State Capitol on March 9th, 2023. CTE students from across the state will set up displays and booths in the rotunda and demonstrate the skills they have learned while meeting with their local legislators to share the importance of CTE. The showcase will end with a rally featuring student speakers who will share their experiences and the impact CTE has had on their lives.

Indiana — CTE stakeholders across Indiana will participate in the State Policy Seminar on February 14 at the Indiana State Capitol. It is a budget year so Indiana CTE leaders expect it to get exciting in the state.

Iowa — As part of advocacy and awareness efforts for CTE in the fall of 2022, the Iowa ACTE hosted exhibit booths at the School Administrators of Iowa conference in August, the Iowa School Counselors conference in November, and the Iowa Association of School Boards conference in November. To continue these advocacy and awareness efforts in early 2023, Iowa ACTE along with dozens of CTE students and teachers will be hosting a CTE Day at the Capitol on February 9. Iowa ACTE members will also be attending the National Policy Seminar in Washington, DC on March 19-22 along with CTSO members from FCCLA, HOSA, Skills USA, and FFA. To honor outstanding CTE students, Iowa ACTE submitted 5 Presidential Scholar nominations to the Iowa Department of Education to be moved on to potential national awards.

Missouri — Planning is going strong for the Region III Conference in June! The "tee off" event could have something to do with golf.... not saying what, but there is a golf venue for everyone in Springfield! In addition to getting ready to welcome our colleagues from across Region III, we are working hard to get ready for our annual CTSO legislative day at the capital in February. This event brings students and CTSO leaders from all over the state to interact with legislators. The administrative division (MCCTA) held a winter meeting in January to help administrators prepare their students to better advocate for CTE in Missouri.
