Reflections from Our Pastors

Tuesday, November 7th, 2023

We are praying for peace. We are troubled by war. We are frightened by escalation. We are brought to tears by torn up and torn apart families and children, those innocent ones.

What happened to “Thou shalt not kill” and war? What happened to “Thou shalt not kill?” Does arrest, trial, and sentencing only apply to those people who are food-, shelter-, and education- deprived, or those people who don’t look like me, or those people who don’t talk like me, or those people with mental illness, or those people who don’t…?

Yet, we hope. We pray because we know that there is something in us that can stop this. We just don’t know what it will take.

Here is Maya Angelou reciting her poem that she recited upon invitation to the United Nations. This first link is her poem alone: “A Brave and Startling Truth.”

The second link is her presentation at Wake Forest University, shocked that she would be invited. It contains her showing us how to act as hope, as ‘a rainbow in a cloud,’ and then she flows into “A Brave and Starting Truth.”

Maya Angelou gives us hope as well as work. Does this motivate us to be more realistic and better able to face the realities of our time and suffer with those who suffer?

We offer Peace Prayers online on Monday mornings at 9 am. If you are interested, the Zoom link is in the weekly Saturday announcements.

Peace within,

Pastor Jane
