Sharon Neidel
President
Last weekend I had the pleasure of attending the Martorana Tour. It was really awesome to see the variety of Porsches on the tour. We had both air and water cooled 911’s, SUV’s, Boxsters, Caymans, Panameras and even a 356. It’s just a reminder Redwood has a place for you no matter what model you drive. I know there are some of you who are probably
afraid to attend that 1st event with your Cayenne or Macan but I promise you will be welcome and probably not alone.
Just a reminder it’s that time of year again and we are looking for members interested in serving on the Board of Directors. PCA’s slogan is that it is “Fueled by Volunteers.” It can be a fun and rewarding experience. The current Board is having so much fun most of us are continuing but there is still room for more volunteers. We would welcome some fresh new ideas. If you are interested contact the Nominating Committee Chairman, David Bunch.
I am excited for the 55th Anniversary Social. Registration is open. The venue is beautiful an
we have some fun surprises for you. If you have memorabilia or stories to share I would love to hear from you. I look forward to seeing you on the 24th.
Come on out and join in the fun. Hope to see you soon.
Questions? Email me.

Vice-President
Hello Redwood Region PCA Members,
As you’re read this, I’m on the road. The C4S is loaded for a three-night visit to Lake Tahoe to visit family and then a quick turn-a-round for a trip
to the Monterey Peninsula.
We’re leaving early on Thursday morning to experience this year’s
Car Week! My wife, Katherine and I are staying in a beautiful cottage
in Carmel Valley for the weekend along the Carmel River. If you
haven’t had a chance to experience Car Week, it really should be on the top of next year’s list. And you should plan early, like now, to secure reservations as there
is so much going on.
Last year while on the drive southbound on highway 101, I randomly found myself grouped
up with several other Porsche drivers and we stayed together from Gilroy to Monterey in a
very spirited drive (yes, we mostly obeyed all the rules of the road). As we each departed on
our own, we all gave each other a flash of headlights or a wave out the window, which we enjoyed and makes owning our Porsches special!
Werks Reunion Monterey is the actual reason for being there! A gathering of Porsches
from all over. It’s an amazing PCA event on the Monterey Pines Golf Course. With corral
parking, seeing fabulous cars and visiting with amazing friends! I can’t wait!
We are very grateful to attend an exclusive PCA event on Saturday at the Mecum Auto Auction held at the Del Monte Golf Course. Early entry, behind the scenes tour and an all access to
this cool auction that includes a wide variety of lots…from vintage 30’s to classic muscle cars
to million-dollar Porsches. Wow!
After all of that, it will be onward to Carmel and the 17-mile drive to really see the big dollar vehicles. Bugatti’s, McLarens, Ferraris, Aston Martins, and Porsches along the stunning
Pacific Ocean. Last year, we saw 4 Bugatti Veyron’s parked next to each other at a pullout on
the road at Spanish Bay!!! As if that is not enough, we’re then on to Ocean Ave in Carmel
where we’ll sit and watch the best cars in the world pass by! We finish the day with a fabulous dinner in Pacific Grove with fellow Redwood Region members, Paul &Barbara Chrisman.
There’s so much more to do, but not enough time.
When we return home, it’s time to get ready for the 55 th Anniversary celebration of the
Redwood Region of the Porsche Club of America! This event is not too be missed. And
there isn’t a better place than the redwood grove of Chenowith Woods. Our President,
Sharon Neidel has put together a fabulous afternoon to celebrate our anniversary
amongst the redwoods and friends. You can register for the event here.
September has a fabulous and exciting event for you to join. The Murphy’s Ironstone Concourse weekend. We’ll be driving from Fairfield to the Gold Country as a group to enjoy the camaraderie of our club and one of the best concourse’s around at the Ironstone Winery! I’m sure there are rooms in the area for lodging so check the internet for availability as we would love to have you join in on the fun. Here’s a link to register.
October brings us to our annual member’s social. This gathering will present the candidates
for our Redwood's 2025’s executive board. I’m planning this event and will announce the
details very soon.
There’s a lot happening in our club with upcoming events, and we’d love for you to be involved
in any way that you can. Please consider joining us for one of our monthly Board meetings
which are on the last Tuesday of every month at Torches Restaurant in Petaluma and, dinner
is on us!
You know, we are “Fueled by volunteers. It’s not just the cars, it’s the people!”
I’m extremely honored to be your Vice President and I look forward to seeing you at one or
more of our future events and, if we haven’t met, please introduce yourself. I’d love to meet
you!
You can always reach out to me directly via email with any questions.
I look forward to hearing from you! Thank you!

Uncle Ferry wants you to join the P.O.S.S.E!
August 25th, 8 am to 10 am.
What’s this, you ask?
It’s the Porsche Owners Sunday Social Event…
Who’s invited?
Any Porsche owner or driver, regardless of the model they have.
When is it?
Every fourth Sunday of the month from 8 am to 10 am.
Where is it?
In front of Starbucks, at the familiar Vintage Oaks Shopping Center, in Novato.
How much will it cost?
Nothing, nada, zip, zero.
Why is this happening?
It’s an opportunity for Porsche owners to have an informal get-together, at a North Bay location, before going to brunch, heading to the hills, cruising to the coast… or, wherever one wishes to drive that day. It’s a chance to meet and talk to your fellow Porsche owners. It’s a chance to put names and faces with the cars. It’s a chance to show off your ride!
See you there!

Weekend at the Ironstone Concours
Registration is open for the much-anticipated, 3rd Annual Redwood Region Weekend at the Ironstone Concours September 26-29.
This event, held in Murphys at the Ironstone Winery is in late September. Many members reserve their rooms upon checkout the previous year (we already have 30 members going)! The most important piece of this event is to secure your own lodging first! The Victoria Inn and Murphys Historic Hotel are sold out but there are many other hotels/motels/inns/vrbos, etc. in and around Murphys and Angels Camp!!
Once your accommodations are secured, you can register HERE!!

Stacy O'Connell
Autocross Director
You may have seen dates on our calendar for autocross with our friends from ESCA (Empire Sports Car Association). Did you notice they are LOCAL?? Right here in our own region at the Sonoma Fairgrounds? Yes!
There are three left this season (see calendar above) and I plan on attending all three. If you want to join the fun, contact Charley @ ESCA for registration information.
Former Redwood President Ben Davoren and Concour Chair Essy Farib attended the July
ESCA autocross and said it was a super fun, 50+-second course and they got 9 runs.
Not bad for an afternoon in our own backyards.
For those who used to autocross with us when we still had our spot at the Airport in Windsor,
or those who are just curious, I encourage you to come out and drive your car the way it wants
to be driven!
And if you don't mind a two-hour-ish drive up to Thunderhill Raceway in Willows, Redwood is hosting our final autocross of the season on September 22. Registration will open by
mid August.
I hope to see you on course soon! Here's a pic from ESCA's July event.
From this angle, it's hard to tell if that's a downed cone or just a pointer cone...
| |
From ESCA's August newsletter, their recap of their AX that Ben and Essy attended last month.
Essy also made the ESCA Newsletter!!!
If you are interested in attending the August 17th ESCA AX, you must email Charley Sawyer or
Marci Jenkins to be put on the list to get into the gate.

After my last column/end of July I attended the Joint Diablo and GGR Region DE 101 aka “Ground School” with many first timers attending, learning what make PCA and region program so inclusive and successful. The joint efforts of Diablo and GGR are really moving both the DE programs to new and exciting levels with even more consistency. The week after I attended the Sonoma raceway Diablo DE on Friday and the GGR DE, PCA Club races and time trials on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday afternoon track walk, Parade laps were held as well, along with Cars & Coffee. Something for everyone. Huge shout out to The Diablo and GGR DE team, ALL the volunteers & National Club Racing staff. Ohhh and many very happy participants. I was using my PCA app and signed up three new members that weekend.
Into July. The Sierra Nevada Region held a meet greet, tech quiz and round 3 of the Zone 7 Series Concours. High desert weather brought rain on Saturday night prompting some parking lot cleaning for me on Sunday. The beautiful Genoa area and park again brought rain in the AM, that didn’t dampen any spirits and hey nothing wrong with another quick detail job. The day cleared up, weather was perfect and the Concours continued. Tip of the hat to the Sierra Nevada team for shuffling a bit when needed and continuing with a fantastic event.
Just last weekend I visited the Monterey Region Concours in Paradise, Round 4 of the Zone 7 series. 85 cars in judged and display. Some amazing BBQ, beautiful cars and so many wonderful discussions with members.
Next, I will be sailing with Princess Cruises/Treffen at Sea. I hope to say hello to the Zone 7 cruisers. Don’t forget all the incredibly special PCA events and activities on board. Including Sunday “day 1 … the 28th” with activities including the ZONE GATHERING.
Whooo-hoo Zone 7 let’s make some noise!
Werks Reunion is Friday August 16th, Many Zone 7 Regions & Members will be present.
I look forward to saying “HI.” to those there.
If Regions and the entire Zone want, let’s try a photo opportunity.
See you ½ an hour before the awards at the main stage.
See you at an event SOON!

David Bunch relines the all the air-cooled cars to put them all together.

| |
ESCA(pe) to a local autocross!
Ben Davoren
Past President
I first joined Redwood Region when I heard about Autocrosses up at the Sonoma County Airport and was hooked after the first five minutes. It really is the ultimate way to understand how your Porsche was designed to be driven in a safe environ: no trees, no oncoming traffic, no deer, no cyclists and no police. That was twelve years and two Porsches ago, and I still love the opportunity to get out and AX with our fellow members. It's just plain fun!!
However, as everyone knows, the Sonoma Airport stopped letting car clubs use their site, and our fellow Porschephiles in the GGR and SVR regions have created wonderful AX events... but they are pretty far away at Thunderhill, Salinas or Crows Landing. Wouldn't it be great if there were something closer so more of us could try it out before committing to a big drive?
| |
Enter ESCA, the Empire Sports Car Association, established in 1963. They were also using the Sonoma County Airport like Redwood was and in fact we use to do joint events with ESCA.
The fall of 2023, ESCA did a "Trial AX" event at the Sonoma County Fairgrounds in Santa Rosa.
This year ESCA has been holding AX's basically right in our backyard at the fairgrounds. Both David Bunch, Past President & AX Chair and Stacy O'Connell AX Director had conversations with the ESCA club management.
| |
Look, even Herbie comes to AX!
So, on July 27th Essy Fariab and I attended their AX as guests. In a word, it was TERRIFIC!! Their AX layout had extra space that week because the "Car Mart" that is usually at one end was vacant (since Sonoma was prepping for their County Fair the next weekend. The "Top Time Of Day" was just over 57 seconds, meaning that we each drove 9 very long runs over the course of the day. I had a 58.6, so very respectable after not AXing for 10 months.
Essy Fariab navigates the Sonoma Fairgrounds AX course!
The ESCA staff were organized, gracious, friendly and very experienced in AX, so it was a very pleasant welcome. It does feel a little odd to be talking about a non-Porsche car club in our newsletter, but there’s no competition between us and no reason why we can’t all enjoy meeting the great variety of fellow drivers all around us in our region. If you’re interested in learning more, check out their website and consider a future AX (they have 3 more this year). You’ll probably find a few of us out there and make some new friends!
Hot fun in the summertime at Martorana Family Winery!
Drivers’ safety meeting with the author on the slightly uneven parallel bars.
Ben Davoren
Past President & Charity Liaison
On a very toasty Sunday August 4th, 56 Redwood members in their 30 lovely Porsches came out for a day of fun in the sun with our club. We started at a new location in the Novato Vintage Oaks shopping center (by Target) so that people could come early and see the monthly "Cars & Coffee" exhibition without a parking hassle.
Everyone, including 11 folks who had never driven with us before, came ready for the drivers meeting and we split into two groups ready for the drive ahead.
| |
Happy cars in front of the Martorana Wine Cave!
With maybe a little confusion early on in the drive getting off of Highway 101, we settled into the gorgeous scenery that is the back roads of Marin and Sonoma counties. Sections of Hicks Valley, Wilson Hill, and Chileno Valley roads were great fun and we were able to stay together pretty well. We were slowed in the first run group by a small group of motorcyclists, which was
a first for me; they usually are jackrabbits. The second run group, deftly led by Tom and Wendy Strobel, had a partial blockade by a giant milk truck, which just goes to show that you can
expect to see EVERYTHING on one of our tours! However, great communication with our mid-group cars (Don Nohai with Ann Marie Trione in my group, and David Bunch with Sharon Neidel in Tom’s) and sweeps (Jeff Hall with Kurt Fischer in Group 1 and Don Magdanz herding the final cats of group 2) meant that it all worked out fine in the end.
| |
Color everywhere you look!
At the midpoint we had no overlap at our “biobreak” site in Monte Rio, so I knew it would be a great drive the rest of way through Guerneville and then up onto Westside and West Dry Creek Valley Roads. I will never get tired of looking out over the glorious vines of Dry Creek, snaking along the edge of the valley, which is best enjoyed from the comfort of a cabriolet.
At the winery, we once again assorted the wonderful color palette of Porsches around Martorana’s outdoor picnic area, while our wine-pourers par excellence Christine and Ellen
were ready with lots of water as well as chilled Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, and my personal favorite, Rosé of Zinfandel. Box lunches from Big John’s market were again outstanding and nimbly handed out by Lisa Davoren and Ann Marie Trione. Zinfandel and Merlot rounded out
our tastings and a number of people took home a variety of wines to enjoy in the future.
| |
Lots of new faces enjoying their tastings.
After lunch, six teams of bocce players braved the heat (we did hand out some Redwood-branded squirt bottles to help beat the 95 degree temps) with fierce competition for the winners’ prizes: souvenir Matchbox Porsches (Targa 4S and 918 Spyder for those who need to know).
Bocce intensely after lunch!
This event is a great reminder of how lucky we are to live – and drive – in a place like this. It
was inspiring to see the number of new drivers (and passengers) who came out to see what all the fuss is about in our club. I hope you will join us on a fuElectronic driving routes on your phone – for free!ture tour, it’s a good time!
| |
Electronic driving routes on your phone – for free!
Ben Davoren
The world of creature comforts in our Porsches continues to expand. I know my own 2017 Carrera S Cabriolet treats me with kid gloves, including both heated and ventilated seats, a heated steering wheel for those arctic temps we get, and lots of adjustments for both power
and handling. Way-finding on our driving tours, however, has always been better with a trusty human navigator with a detailed map and a cue sheet. For a few years, those navigators have been able to use GPS units and cell phones to assist them. The newest generation of map-making tools allows for last-minute updates to be made by the route owner so that everyone on the tour can have up-to-the minute directions literally – and automatically – in the palm of their hand. The turn-by-turn voice instructions can even be read to you through the sound system in your car if it’s new enough.
If you are a Redwood Region member, you can have access to our club’s entire library of
driving routes since 2021, download them to your phone, and have real-time turn-by-turn instructions even where there is no cell service! If you want, you can print them out at home.
You can even copy them and edit them online to create your own version of a drive or a
bike ride. And it’s all free to you.
While many of you have already taken advantage of this ability, I get questions on our tours about how exactly this works, so I figured I would outline the steps here and include a few key links. Most importantly, please email me to get the link to become a member of the Redwood Region PCA club at ridewithgps.com. Ridewithgps.com, while created for cyclists who are often out where there is no cell service, is a wonderful tool for creating – and sharing – any kind of driving or cycling route, on or off of major roads. We have a core group of folks who have used
it for several years to create our club’s driving tours and it’s pretty easy to learn. Here are the directions to prepare your smartphone for our next great driving tour:
1. Using your favorite web browser, create a free account on ridewithgps.com. No need for a
trial version or a pay version;
2. While you are logged in, using the Club Directory or this search link if the directory isn’t obvious, find the Redwood Region PCA page. You can click on the Apply to Join link and we
will let you in. If you have problems, please email me as above for the auto-join link;
3. On your smartphone (either Android or iPhone), download the ridewithgps app from your
App Store and login with the same email address you used to create your free online
ridewithgps account;
4. Tap the Redwood Region PCA club logo on the app homepage, or tap More in the lower right then tap Organizations;
5. Select Organization Routes from our club’s mobile page;
6. Filter and sort our club routes using the toolbar at the top. We are now naming all of our
routes so that the first words are the Destination, and then the year (so you can see how current the route is), and finally, the driving start location. For example,
MartoranaWinery – 2024 – from Vintage Oaks;
7. Tap the name of the route to view it;
8. If you just want to start navigation (using cell service) click the NAVIGATE button in the lower left of the route preview;
9. If you don’t know that you will have cell service on your route, however, then you should download the route for “offline use”. If taking this step tells you that you need to upgrade your account, then you are not yet a member of our ridewithgps.com club! Email me as above to be sure that happens;
10. More details are available in a PDF that has these steps along with images, which you can download from DropBox here. Ridewithgps help pages are also very, very useful and you can learn a ton more about how it all works there;
11. The final Pro Tip is if you have a newer Porsche with Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, you
can plug your phone in to your car to be charged and select “AUX” as the input in your car’s PCM source menu. That way, your turn-by-turn instructions will come directly over your car’s sound system speakers and you will never have to touch your phone or a paper map again
while driving after you tap “Navigate” at the start!

PORSCHE MOTORSPORTS "Junkie"
The end of July saw the end of the ABB FORMULA E season on July 20th & 21st in London, England at the very unusual London ExCeL Circuit that starts inside and also has quite a bit of the track outside, which can be very challenging when there is rain outside.
Going into the final 2 races of the season, PORSCHE's Pascal Wehrlein was tied for 2nd in the Championship with 155 points with Mitch Evans from team Jaguar behind Nick Cassidy at 165 points, also from Team Jaguar. PORSCHE's António Félix Da Costa was 4th in Championship Points with 134 points, thanks to him winning both of the races up in Portland, Or. in June.
On Saturday in race #1, Pascal started from P3 on the grid and used his attack modes at the right times to secure his 3rd ABB FORMULA E Win of the season and take the points lead by 3 points!! Jaguar's Mitch Evans finished 2nd in the race and was now 2nd in points.
Sunday's race #2 from London PORSCHE's Da Costa was a DNF and Jaguar's Cassidy
finished 7th.
Sunday's race saw Pascal start P4 on the grid with Jaguar's Evans right next to him at P3. Pascal drove a "smart" race finishing P2 with Evans right behind in 3rd, securing the
2024 ABB FORMULA E Championship.
TAG Heuer Porsche Formula E Team finished 2nd in the Team Championship to Team Jaguar and also 2nd in the Manufacturers Championship thanks to the points from Andretti's
FORMULA E team.

Another big weekend for PORSCHE Motorsports was IMSA making it's visit to Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wis. Road America is where my "Love" of sports car racing was born in 1979. I had grown up going to stock car races with my parents & cousins at Santa Fe Speedway, a local clay track outside Chicago and then got into drag racing with my 1956 Chevy (with a 396) at U.S. 30 Dragstrip in northern Indiana and Union Grove, Wis. I went there as my Ex's Uncle Terry was racing a MGB in SCCA's June Sprints and her dad was his pit crew. Being around cars all my life, I started helping on the MGB where I could but just enjoyed the atmosphere at the track.
The next 3 years, I traveled all over the Midwest going to SCCA races traveling in the coveted school bus that hauled the MGB and was where we would sleep.
Road America is situated on 640 natural acres of rolling hills in Wisconsin's Kettle Moraine and
is known as “America's National Park of Speed™”.

Hello Redwood,
When a child starts the school year in a new grade it can be exciting and a bit scary. A new teacher to get used to, new subjects to learn, and perhaps new children to meet. Imagine then, what it is like for children in foster care who often change schools multiple times a year. The stress of always being in a new situation is profoundly challenging for youth in foster care.
It is estimated that foster children move schools at least twice a year, and by the time they age out of the system, over one third will have changed schools five or more times. The result of all of these changes is that youth in foster care lag behind every other group of students; children
in poverty, non-English speaking children and children with disabilities. Children in foster care are estimated to lose 4 to 6 months of academic progress with each move, causing them to fall behind and, later, decreasing the chances they will graduate from high school, a predictor of
later success in life. Only half of young people in foster care complete high school by age 18.
Thankfully, there are everyday citizens in our community who are helping to keep foster children in the same school longer and secure the educational resources the children need to advance academically.
Back to school is a time for children and youth to be excited about their futures and to reconnect with routines, as they look forward to seeing their friends, teachers and staff, and return to their extra-curricular activities. For children experiencing turmoil and confusion in their lives, returning to school can provide much-needed stability and consistency. The start of a new school year can also be a challenge for children in the child welfare system. Children and youth who have experienced abuse or neglect may be entering a new school this year with higher levels of stress and uncertainty.
As students return to school and build new routines, having a consistent adult to help navigate challenges and advocate for their best interests as a Court-Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) volunteer is more important than ever.
Research shows that children in foster care who have a CASA:
- Have better educational outcomes
- Are more likely to be enrolled in school
- Get more educational, therapeutic and medical services
- Are more likely to be re-united with their families
- Are administered fewer Psychotropic medications
- Spend less time in foster care
At CASA of Sonoma County, we believe that all children in foster care deserve a CASA who can help them to understand their situation and can advocate fiercely on their behalf.
In Partnership for Children,
Heloisa Heinen
CASA Executive Director
