Information for ministers, educators, church administrators, clerks, and congregations

Happy Retirement to Franklin Reding

Rev. Franklin Reding, assistant to the stated clerk and records manager, is retiring on June 30. Franklin joined Presbytery of the James in 1997 when he became pastor of Providence Church in Powhatan, a congregation he served until 2013. He was hired by the presbytery on a part-time basis in 2008 then became full time in 2013.

Franklin’s contributions to the presbytery are numerous. His knowledge of church and presbytery history, Book of Order requirements, and scriptural interpretation are reflected in each conversation with him. His patience and guidance have been a solace to those who have navigated the lengthy process to ordination. He has a gift for collaboration and sharing and he extends warm hospitality to everyone he meets. He will be sincerely missed.

As Franklin approaches this new chapter of life, we wish him the blessings of a long and enjoyable retirement. We offer praise and thanksgiving to God for his life, his faith, and his work.

Apply by August 1 for Youth Council

The deadline for youth to apply to serve on Presbytery Youth Council (YoCo) for 2023-2024 is approaching. Encourage teens in your congregation to consider this leadership opportunity. It is a wonderful way for youth to grow in their faith and plan events for themselves and their peers. Find the application and more information on the presbytery website.

Presbytery Office Closed July 4

In observance of Independence Day, the presbytery office will be closed Tuesday, July 4. We hope you enjoy the day with your loved ones and community celebrating America's 247th birthday.

Our Small Church Ministry has been working this year to build connections and support among pastors of smaller congregations. After a successful retreat in the spring, they are holding potluck dinners around the presbytery. The most recent event was Sunday at Tabor Presbyterian Church. We are grateful to the leaders of this ministry and to these pastors for their work in building the kin-dom of God.
