On Tuesday 1 March 2022, the Republican Party of Virginia Beach lost one of its own, Chad Brown, the Chief of Staff for Delegate Tim Anderson. Chad had become a part of our community serving as Delegate Anderson’s campaign manager prior to becoming Chief of Staff. He was both a friend and fellow worker in the party, and just a great guy. He will be missed. Please extend prayers for Chad’s family and loved ones.

As the General Assembly moves closer to the end of session, Gov. Glenn Youngkin signed eight new bills into law on Wednesday involving taxes, economic development, Virginia’s retirement system and higher education construction. These were bipartisan priorities that reflect an ability for the divided general assembly to work together regardless of differences. This is what Governor Youngkin focused on achieving and even though much has yet to be accomplished, these victories are positive for the commonwealth.

As the campaign season moves forward, passions rise, and issues develop. This is expected and we have had two matters develop over the past three weeks that require discussion. Two weeks ago, we addressed poorly chosen words, by a congressional candidate, that presented a false moral equivalence comparing forced covid vaccinations with holocaust deaths. There is absolutely no relationship between the two and while no harm was intended by the candidate, the social media post inflicted tremendous pain on the Jewish community. This past week a school board member posted a social media comment that implied immigrant children, primarily from South America, present an unsustainable financial burden on the local community because of special needs such as ESL. Again, the School board member intended no harm, but the poorly written and insensitive post led to outrage in local minority communities and allegations of racism. While neither the candidate or the school board member in question are racists, they are guilty of insensitivity and lack of concern or thought for the unintended consequences of their statements. This provides fuel for left leaning, liberal news outlets and politicians who are not concerned about “intent” of what is written or said but look for raw political advantage and exploitation. These types of controversies are entirely avoidable and serve as a distraction.

Words matter and there are consequences for not carefully expressing our thoughts so that these misunderstandings do not occur. Social media is a dangerous and impersonal vehicle, and we must not allow it to distance us from the humanity of the people we serve. We cannot see or touch the people we are sharing our thoughts with when we type in the words, but they are there, on the other side of the screen waiting to act upon what they read or hear. People hold their elected leaders, and candidates to a higher standard of behavior because of the influence they have, and because they represent all of us, not just some of us. Therefore, our leaders and candidates must always exercise sincerity, sensitivity, and discernment in what they say and the actions they take. The people they want to lead, expect, and deserve nothing less, regardless of political affiliation.

Regarding the current school board situation, the Republican Party of Virginia Beach believes that all students enrolled in the Virginia Beach Public School system should have complete access to all educational opportunities available. Virginia Beach is a vibrant, cosmopolitan city with a diverse population and the VBCPS system is one of the best in the state, with a stellar reputation for meeting the needs of our students, to include those with special needs. VBCPS educators and staff are second to none and they have our unquestioned support. Our school board must work closely with the superintendent and his staff to address funding and staffing issues that impact our ability to provide needed resources, but students must never be singled out and held responsible for the same, regardless of immigration status or country of origin. We have a constitutional responsibility to provide a free education for all school age children throughout the commonwealth. We absolutely support our republican school board members for the hard work they do, and know that they will always make our students their number one priority!
