Letter from the CEO
Dear Friends of Red Panda Network,
It is hard for us to express our appreciation for the generous support that we received the last six months. To mention all of the amazing people that have enabled us to do our work would take 100 pages and I'm sure that none of you would ever finish the newsletter. But I would like to thank just a few people that have inspired us to work harder the last few months because of their extraordinary efforts. First, I would like to thank Haley and Michelle Sun-Smith and The Park School for their incredible work that raised awareness about biodiversity conservation and red panda during their International Red Panda Day activities. Next, I would like to thank Mr. David C Hettlinger, whose quarterly support has enabled us to hire a new team of forest guardians in a critical area of red panda habitat in Taplejung. Also, I would like to thank Mozilla Foundation, the maker of the Firefox web-browser, who have provided wonderful support to our mission with their FirefoxLive campaign that has raised awareness about red panda to millions of people around the world. Finally, I am extremely thankful for our wonderful field partner, Himali Conservation Forum, that supports all of our field efforts in Taplejung. They have ensured that all of our efforts ran smoothly the past few months.
Our field team has been busy the past six months, our forest guardians have been monitoring red panda monthly in their respective forests, we have conducted a baseline survey in six additional villages and captured new images of red panda in our camera traps, and we have hosted six groups of supporters and tourists. Through this work, we have learned some interesting information about red panda, like the fact that they are predated upon by raptors. Our team also conducted a participatory elementary school teachers training with 23 teachers. At the training the teachers created a Nepalese red panda curriculum to be used in their classrooms this spring.
Some other events in the last few months:
- We are now an independent organization in the United States and are registered as an international non-governmental organization (INGO) in Nepal.
- I was able to attend the Zoos and Aquariums Committing to Conservation conference in Seattle, Washington and gave a talk on our community-based monitoring efforts. The remarkable work of our field team and partner was well accepted by the attendees.
Please help us by going online and donating today or if you are not interested in donating online, please send a check to OUR NEW ADDRESS: Red Panda Network P.O. Box 868 Newark, CA 94560 Thank you again for your kind support and please consider sharing this with your family and friends,

Brian Williams, Chief Executive Officer, Red Panda Network Mill Valley, California

Namaste and greetings from Nepal
Time has passed so quickly that it has already been one and half year with Red Panda Network. I enjoyed a lot my time with Mountain people for red panda conservation. Our work on red panda conservation has been well received by all stakeholders and we have become a part of them to ensure their long-term conservation. We received enormous support from local communities, government authorities and conservation partners in order to conserve the last remaining mountain forest and red panda in the eastern Himalayan region. With this support, we created a dedicated team of forest guardians to update the red panda database from the region. We have become the organization in the region that has made the most sightings of endangered red panda in the wild!
Our effort has made a tangible impact on red panda conservation. There was little information about red panda and their habitat from eastern region, particularly in the Taplejung district, in the past. Red Panda Network conducted scientific survey and published scientific status of red panda in the region and continued its community based monitoring utilizing the capacity of local forest user groups. Red Panda monitoring techniques such as camera traps, transect walk and scat identification have been well performed by forest guardians. The understanding of red panda values in mountain ecosystem and mountain people has been enhanced. We utilized capacity of district based journalists (print and electronic) to create synergy for red panda conservation. We have also developed red panda curriculum for school children with active involvement of 25 schools from the red panda zone. We are working with district education office, conservation partners and a forum of school teachers to effectively implement the curriculum. Our field based conservation partner has been recognized as a red panda conservation and information centre from where local people have direct access to obtain red panda information at their convenience.
By now we have a dedicated RPN scientific team, an experienced NGO partner, a dedicated team of forest guardians and a dedicated team of school teachers on the ground. This combination is essential for the long lasting conservation of red panda and their habitat. We are looking forward to your continued support to conserve the last remaining population of red panda in Nepal.
Finally I would like to thank the RPN team in Nepal, RPN HQ, USA , our local conservation partner HCF, local communities, Taplejung based conservation line agencies and government authorities for their honest support for the conservation of red panda and their habitat in the eastern Himalayan region.

International Red Panda Day
| Thank you to all of you that helped us make the inaugural International Red Panda Day a memorable one. We had 30 participating zoos around the world and 5 national schools raise $5,000 and create an estimated 1,000 Red Panda Rangers on a single day!
International Red Panda Day returns this year on Saturday September 17, 2011 with the Red Panda Games! Contact us at lindy.dang@redpandanetwork.org for more information when it becomes available and to find out how you can participate. |
News from the Field
| Teacher Awareness Training
In December 2010, we conducted red panda awareness training for elementary school teachers in local Nepalese communities. We saw the need to mobilize school children from within red panda habitat zone to assure involvement of different ladders of the local community at their full capacity for red panda conservation. The objective of the training was to train teachers on values of red panda in mountain ecosystem and to produce a red panda curriculum for the school children.
We had 23 participants that helped us strengthen the capacity of school teachers about the values of red panda, assess the the current status of red panda in the PIT Corridor, produce red panda curriculum for school children and establish coordination among teachers across different areas of red panda zone.
Field Sightings
On a recent trip to the Taplejung district by our Field Ecologist, Tulsi Ram Subedi and 3 of our forest guardians, 2 red pandas were spotted. Sadly only one was live. Here's an excerpt from Tulsi's update:
I have also collected the data of raptors in the area and incidence of raptor predation on red panda was conformed because we saw part of red panda hide on the open forest area killed by Mountain Hawk eagle or Golden eagle (they were encountered near by this area). I found risk of red panda predation by raptors could increase in this area. Livestock farming is the main occupation of local communities of red panda range and they have cattle herding station inside red panda habitat which lead to forest destruction. This type of culture could create lot of open forest. Open forest is the suitable habitat for raptors to find their prey.

A Day in the Life of a Forest Guardian
This real story of forest guardian is taken from Nepal where RPN has intensified its community-based red panda conservation project in the eastern Himalayan region.
Mr. Ratna Baniya, a forest guardian based in Kalikhola VDC of the Taplejung district, has enormous passion to do something for red panda conservation on the ground. His motivation to save the lives of red panda in his surroundings stems from witnessing and experiencing RPN's work. He wakes up early in the morning by 4: 30 am at the latest which is the usual time to start his day. At his regular work, he milks 5 cattle and keeps them out from the hut and manages some diet khole. By the time he takes the cattle out, his wife would have made cups of salty tea. He drinks tea in front of a camp fire inside his roofed house and chats with his wife about his day's work. He points out his day's work list and wishes that his wife would complete those. He dresses up with fleece provided by RPN and come out to garden. He looks around to find somebody to join him in the forest. He makes a long whistle to connect to his friend in the jungle if there are any. He heads off to the forest expecting his friend response in the same way. In a minute, he receives a long whistle from his friend telling him that he is already in the forest. He directs himself towards the survey block as he is not only collecting fodder today, he is also monitoring red panda in his forest. He knows that he has to cover two transects for red panda monitoring. He does not forget to take a pencil and survey sheet when he goes into the forest. As he walks, he keeps record of scats and any other signs of red panda while proceeding along the transect. He wishes he could see a red panda directly, that helps him to know the health of panda. However he does not get this opportunity this time. He expects the next day as he is monitoring red panda for the next 5 days. He completes his survey and looks for fodder for his cattle.
He does not cut Malingo and Nigalo (two different species of bamboo) from that site. He knows that last time he had cut these from this site and this time he wants to grow them all for red panda. Instead he chooses the next site for his collection. He thinks by the next month fodder at the first site will grow and be ready for red panda food so he alternates cutting sites. He spends roughly 4 hours in the forest for red panda monitoring and fodder collection. When he returns home, the cattle bark at him. He cannot go past without giving them food. He loves his cattle as much as his family members. In remote place like this, cattle are real friends and he shares tears and happiness with them all the time.
His children approach to him. He asks them whether they drank milk or not. He enters his house and sits close to the fire place. He takes off his cloths and sits for lunch with his family members. After lunch he sticks to his calendar.
In the afternoon he moves off to the forest to collect fodder. This time he is joined by his wife. His wife follows him and they go into the forest. They collect fodder and also fuel wood. He asks his wife to collect dead tree for fuel wood. Suddenly his wife sees red panda scat. At the moment he was on the next tree. He climbed down and looked at the scat, speculating the age of scats. He observes the surrounding vegetation, its coverage, water availability and distance from the site to the village. He keeps a few of them with him and returns home. Later in the day, he calls to his friend and discusses about the site where he found red panda scats.
Mr. Baniya, has become a local conservation activist. He advocates about red panda conservation and its importance to their future life. This is how he lives in a village, far away from the developed world, working for the ecosystem conservation. He has not visited Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal and has never known about the Internet. He shares his experiences and how he used to see many red pandas in the past when he went into the forest with his father. Now red pandas are decreasing as his father's age (72) is increasing. He wonders how this number is decreasing so dramatically as he is not aware of urban expansion, climate change and pollution. He is not contributing to pollution in his area. He lives completely outside of the modern world.
This is something we should learn from these people who are working for climate change mitigation. These innocent villagers have no contribution to increasing pollution but they are hardworking in the mitigation of climate change. Thus it is time to address their livelihood issues and utilize their traditional knowledge of sustainable forest resources before they witness the severe impact of climate change in their daily lives. Let's work together and make them wake up for their resource conservation.

Mozilla partnered with Red Panda Network, among other conservation organizations, to raise awareness about red pandas, the namesake of their web-browser Firefox.
To kick off Mozilla's Firefox Live campaign, Mozilla helped us spread the word about International Red Panda Day amongst their community and adopted each of our red pandas. Encouraging their online community to do the same, we received overwhelming support over the 2010 holiday season.
For Christmas 2010, Mozilla helped us complete our Christmas wish list by surprising our Forest Guardians with winter care packages that included GPS units, digital cameras, rain outfits, winter outfits, boots, compasses and measuring tapes. Click here to see our current in-kind wish list.
Mozilla recently concluded its Firefox Live campaign with a contest to win a Red Panda Network eco-trip. The winner, Andre Lewis, will receive an all expenses paid trip to Nepal to spot wild red panda. To view the winning submission, search for FirefoxLiveTREK - Andre on YouTube or click on this link. Congratulations Andre!

Marc Cormier
Like most people, I discovered the Red Panda while at a local zoo. I was intrigued by this beautiful animal and discovered through reading all about its uniqueness and its vulnerable status in the world.
For years, I have read about living fossils, from the Ginkgo Tree to the Red Panda and believe these living creatures are an important link to the past and a better understanding of evolutionary science.
A few years ago, I decided that on my birthday, I would donate to three charities of my choosing, I immediately thought of the Red Panda Network since I had come across your site while reading about this wonderful animal.
E mma Dale I have always had a passion of Red Pandas! I don't think I could put an age on it! But I sure can tell you why I first loved them! Their super-cuteness! I can however put a time on the age I was when I found out how endangered the Red Pandas were. It was afternoon in Sydney's Taronga zoo in February, I was six. I was running through my usual speech about the Red Panda (I had written it and memorised it just in case). And my Grandma (a world renown environmental scientist) broke the horrible news to be that the Red Panda's were endangered (I had a large tantrum!). Ever since then I have been doing all I can to help the Red Pandas, from a local community newsletter when I was eight. And collecting signatures to show support to your organisation! To conducting initial research for a research paper on the adaptations of Red Pandas, I have been actively trying to help the Red Pandas! This year I was also published in a Popular Australian Teen Magazine on my conservation efforts, and in a National Geography Teachers Journal! I'm so excited to begin to really make a difference to the Plight of the Red Panda! |
