Online Adoptions will close at midnight on
Friday, October 1st.

In-Person Adoptions may be made at the KALB office
(125 East Street).

ADOPT DUCKS AT FIDDLERS! KALB be adopting ducks at our booth at the Old Time Fiddlers Convention Thursday evening, Sept. 30th, through Saturday, October 2nd, at 1:00 pm. Booth will be located on the south side of the Founders Hall stage area.

Limestone County Residents may take one trailer or pickup
truck load of debris to the transfer station for free.

GUIDELINES AND RESTRICTIONS:

  • Any appliance with Freon must have the compressor removed or be accompanied by a certificate stating that the Freon has been professionally removed.
  • No hazardous household or medical waste.
  • Contractors may NOT dump for free.
  • Must provide PROOF of RESIDENCE (Example: CURRENT UTILITY BILL)

The Athens-Limestone Recycling Center is pleased to bring back Community Collection Centers to the following areas for public use:

  • East Limestone High School
  • Cedar Hill Elementary
  • West Limestone High School
  • Owens Elementary Property
  • Elkmont High School
  • Johnson Elementary
  • Clements High School
  • Ardmore High School
  • Piney Chapel



BUSINESS HOURS
Monday through Friday
6:00 am to 2:30 pm.
 
The Recycling Center will accept the
following materials at the
LUCAS FERRY RD. FACILITY
during business hours. (Bins are
promptly removed at 2:30 pm.)

Please SORT BEFORE ARRIVING. If bringing items in a plastic bag, empty your items out of the bag into the correct bins.

  • Container Plastics #1, #2, and #5
  • Plastic bags and film (clean and dry)
  • Electronics (if you have heavy items, please bring help to unload. We currently do not have staff at the plant to help you. There is a $10 fee for TVs of any size. All other electronics are accepted free of charge.)
  • Cardboard (including paperboard: cereal boxes, drink cartons, etc.) (Cardboard MUST be broken down. Unbroken boxes take up too much space!)
  • Newspaper (must be separate from other paper)
  • Junk Mail, Office Paper, Magazines
  • Shredded Paper (please leave in bag)
  • Steel/Tin Cans and Other Steel Items
  • Aluminum Cans and Other Aluminum Items
  • Glass Bottles and Jars - All Colors (Glass must be sorted by colors: brown, clear, and blue and green. NO other types of glass accepted!)

DIRECT CURBSIDE RECYCLING QUESTIONS TO:

City curbside recycling pickup will begin on Monday, October 4th. The west side (west of Hwy 31) will be picked up on the 1st and 3rd Mondays, and the east side (east of Hwy 31) will be picked up on the 2nd and 4th Mondays. City residents may request a blue recycling cart by calling the City of Athens Sanitation Department at 256-233-8747.


BBB Shred Day and More!
Saturday, October 16th
The Better Business Bureau will be hosting a shred day and more on Saturday, October 16th. The event will be held at Athens State University from 9:00 am to noon. Please enter the university at the Hobbs Street entrance. This is a contact free event. Volunteers will unload your vehicle as you drive through.

The following services will be available:

·       Document Shredding – All residents and small businesses will have the opportunity to bring up to 5 boxes or bags of documents for onsite shredding by a commercial shredding company. All shredded paper will then be recycled.
·       Electronic Recycling – Residents may bring any type of electronic that has a cord or battery for recycling, thanks to the Athens Limestone-Recycling Center. Items that can be recycled include desk top computers, laptops, tablets, gaming consoles, computer towers, cords, cell phones, TVs (*$10 fee per television, all other electronics recycled for free), and other household electronics.

·       Drug Takeback – Athens Police Department will collect over the counter and prescription pills, patches, controlled substances, and veterinary medications. No needles or liquid medication will be accepted at this event.

·       Donations of Used Household Items and Clothing – America’s Thrift Store will be collecting these donations to benefit Make-A-Wish Alabama. There will be donation receipts available for tax purposes.
