Recycling Food Waste Made Easy!

The City of Ventura is excited to offer its Food Waste Recycling Program, part of a statewide effort to combat climate change by reducing greenhouse gas emissions. By participating in this program, you can make a significant impact on the environment.

The Food Waste Recycling Program has been available to all single-family homes since January 2023. All households should be participating in the program to comply with state law.

Many multi-family properties already have service. The City of Ventura and E.J. Harrison & Sons staff are working with property managers to sign the remaining multi-family properties up for service.

Here's how you can participate:

Bag Options:

Any bag of your choice is acceptable, including paper, plastic, and compostable plastic. We recommend you reuse bags you already have, reducing the need to purchase new ones. We've expanded our approved bag options to include folded-shut paper bags, ensuring durability and minimizing contamination.

Bag Preparation:

Proper bag preparation is crucial. If you're using a plastic bag, remember to tie it securely. For paper bags, fold down the top a few times to ensure it's sealed. Avoid placing liquids in your bag to maintain its integrity. While food waste naturally contains some liquids, please keep other liquid forms like juice, broth, and oil out.

Accepted Food Waste Items:

We accept all food waste (spoiled or fresh), including:

  • meat
  • bones
  • fish
  • shells
  • dairy
  • bread
  • fruits
  • vegetables
  • peels
  • pits
  • cobs
  • coffee grounds
