Responsibly recycle electronics, mattresses, appliances, lightbulbs and much more at the annual Community Recycling Drop-Off on September 23.

Fall is here and with it that "back to school" feeling and renewed desire to learn. The YVSC staff has taken this "back to school" feeling to heart. Cameron will be attending the local Solid Waste Association of America (SWANA) conference to present and learn more on recycling in rural Colorado. Suzie attended a workshop on Tiny Homes through the Colorado Chapter of International Code Council (ICC). Anne is attending Rural Philanthropy Days on effective nonprofit management and fundraising. And Suzie and I will be attending the Rocky Mountain Utility Efficiency Exchange at the end of September to bring the latest in energy efficiency policy and practices back to the Yampa Valley. These opportunities not only satisfy our desire to learn but also provide new resources and information to make our community more sustainable and resilient. We encourage you to reach out to us with questions or to discuss what we have learned.

Warmly,

Sarah Jones

September Talking Green: The Future of Coal
Does coal have a future in the United States?

Paul Komor Speaker
Tuesday, September 26
5:30 - 7 p.m.
St. Paul's Episcopal Church
846 Oak Street, Steamboat Springs
with Paul Komor

Coal use in the United States is down dramatically, and coal prices remain low. Yet the current administration is a vocal supporter, and some countries (notably India and Vietnam) are turning to coal to provide electricity for growing populations. Is coal coming back, or will it fade away?

Paul Komor will lead a discussion on how coal powered the U.S. for much of the 20 th century, why coal use in the U.S. is way down, and what the future holds for coal.

Paul Komor is a University of Colorado at Boulder faculty member and a Steamboat Springs resident. For his work with the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Paul was named a contributor to the Nobel Peace Prize in 2007.

Sustainable Homes Tour 2017
1 - 4 p.m.
Fairview neighborhood, Steamboat Springs

This year's Sustainable Homes Tour highlights how green building can work for everyone. Walk through the Fairview neighborhood to visit six energy-efficient, beautifully-designed and smaller homes. Some of the homes are still under construction, so participants will get a real behind the scenes look at the latest green building technology. Homes on the tour include a new, very energy-efficient apartment atop a garage; a 1,000-square-foot home where the homeowner worked as her own general contractor; and a spec home transformed mid-build by a LEED professional to be more energy efficient.

New this year: The tour will be self-guided starting at the Art Depot. Each home will offer a short educational talk on the half hour followed by time for questions.

>> If you would like to sponsor or volunteer for this year's tour, please email Suzie Romig.

Tips to pack a waste-free lunch (for kids and adults)

Whether you're bringing your lunch to work or packing lunch for yourchild to take to school, you can reduce waste and conserve resources by how you pack it.

Packing lunch items in a container that can be used again means one less plastic bag in the trash. There are great options for reusable lunchboxes, storage containers, sandwich wraps and snack bags, many of which can be purchased locally. If you need to pack a spoon or fork, pack a metal one that can be taken home and washed and reused. If you don't want your best flatware getting lost, buy silverware odds and ends at a local thrift store specifically for use on-the-go.
