MISSISSIPPI ACADEMY OF FAMILY PHYSICIANS

Recognize the Signs of Laryngeal Cancer

Mississippi has the 4th highest incidence of laryngeal cancer in the U.S. Early symptoms are often attributed to other common symptoms of a cold, sore throat or benign neck mass. Primary care physicians are the front line of early cancer detection. Become an expert at spotting the early signs of laryngeal and other head and neck cancers and help us intervene early and save lives. Join Dr. Anne Kane, Otolaryngoloty at UMMC to learn how you can spot the signs of laryngeal cancer early and save lives.

Upon completion of this activity, participants should be able to:

  1. Describe the incidence and risk factors for head and neck cancers
  2. Identify “warning symptoms” of laryngeal cancers
  3. Perform a basic workup for a suspected laryngeal or head and neck cancer
  4. Identify when it is appropriate to refer a patient to ENT for symptoms concerning a laryngeal cancer
  5. Describe normal airway anatomy and identify anatomic differences between tracheostomy and laryngectomy.

Dr. Anne Kane has quickly become known as one of the state's leading physicians treating head and neck cancer and providing microvascular reconstruction. She is committed to providing an outstanding patient experience in a multidisciplinary team setting. When she isn't at the hospital, Dr. Kane enjoys travel, yoga, and photography.
