Recapping The Second Annual James L. Melcher Memorial Grand Prix Épée Open

On Sunday, 14 April 2024, the Fencers Club hosted the second annual James L. Melcher Memorial Grand Prix Epee Open.

A total of 52 fencers participated in the event. Prize money donated by Charles Melcher, Liz Melcher Luckett, and April Benasich Melcher was distributed among the first three winners of the men’s division and the first place winner of the women’s division.

Proceeds from the event go to the Fencers Club Scholarship Committee which provides annual financial support for members in need and supports our high performance athletes who are actively competing to make national and world teams.

Jean-Marc Oppenheim donated the cup which is on display in the front office in his friend’s name and memory.

Jamie passed away on Monday 17 April 2023. He was a lifelong fencer and member of the Fencers Club where he served as Chairman of the Board of Directors for many years. He was national epee champion in 1971 and 1972 and a member of the U.S. national team for the Munich Olympics in 1972. In 2013 he was inducted into the Fencing Hall of Fame.

Jamie’s love and commitment for the FC and fencing was most conspicuously exhibited as the club’s single most major financial donor to the FC. Jamie’s gift enabled us to purchase and build our state of the art training facility in Midtown Manhattan that for many of us, young and old, is our second home.
