Pre-K Students Publish a Book: Adventure of Rainbow Unicorn Mountain
Pre-kindergarten students at Raynham Children's Development Center have written and illustrated a book titled "Adventure of Rainbow Unicorn Mountain." The center expressed immense pride via a Facebook post, applauding the children's hard work in writing, illustrating, and publishing the book. The story originated from a game the students created called "The Dark Mountain." Using their imagination and teamwork, they crafted this magical tale.

Historical Tidbit:
Raynham / Taunton Dog Kennel
The Dog Kennel was a training and boarding facility for the Raynham /. Taunton Dog Track . The track at Raynham was active from approximately the 1960s to 2009. The kennel property was originally owned by the Szura family, who then sold it to car mechanic John O’Rourke. O’Rourke began using the property to kennel and train dogs to race at the Raynham Park track. Dog racing was at the height of its popularity in the 1980s, when the Raynham Park and Wonderland Greyhound Park tracks drew more spectators than the Bruins, Celtics, and Patriots combined. However, the increased popularity also brought increased public opposition to dog racing, and Massachusetts banned dog racing in 2009.

Climate Can Do:
Reduce, Reuse, and Upcycle
One of the many ways that we can help against climate change is to reduce our consumption, reuse pieces that we already have, and upcycle them to make something new. Often we are quick to throw things out that we are no longer using, but why not give things a second life and keep them out of the landfills?
Ways to Reduce, Reuse, and Upcycle
- Before throwing something away, consider if you or someone else could use it again in the same or different way. Passing things on to friends, selling on marketplaces, or donating them are all ways to give something another life.
- Avoiding overconsumption is challenging, but being mindful of new purchases curbs the amount of new things being made.
- Upcycling is taking something old and making it into something new! These projects can be practical, creative and fun!
- Feel the need to shop? Going thrifting and buying second hand is a fun way to get your shopping fix in and find unusual items, inexpensively.
- The fashion industry is responsible for 10% of the world’s carbon emissions and consumes 10% of all water used industrially worldwide. (Sustainable Harvest International)
- Shop close to home and within your community. People often resell or give away things they do not need anymore. It could be just what you are looking for!
The more we reduce our consumption of products, reuse and upcycle, the more we keep out of landfills and we lower production in the first place. This also saves you money while helping to keep the environment safe for us humans.
Written by Skylar Robles, Buzz Around Intern and UMass Boston student.
Together, we can make a difference by taking action to live sustainably. Let's empower ourselves to create a better future for our planet, one step at a time.

Re-Birth
“Getting a second life is one thing. Making a better life, that's the trick.”
~ Rick Riordan, The Blood of Olympus
“i learnt from the autumn leaves, the formula of healing.
every year, they break, fall off the trees and die.
and then again in a few months, they find their way back home.
reborn, living a new life just to die again.
but never did that stop them growing again.
so why can't we humans just live up to them.
fall, get hurt, bear pain but have enough
courage and energy to stand up and fight back again.” ~ Renesmee Stormer
|
As the buds dare to show themselves on the tips of these bare branches, and slowly we see color emerge from forsythia and daffodils; once again we succumb to re-birth, as a child pushed crying from the womb.
We grow a year wiser, encouraged to see the earth and it's inhabitants through a new lens. What shall we do better in 2024? In what ways shall WE grow?
~ Jacquie
