On June 20th, 2024 over 2,000 registrants joined the Network for its 22nd Annual New York State Supportive Housing Conference. The conference featured 23 panels with experts sharing updates and best practices for providers and operators of supportive housing, including new strategies to support older adults, the power of tenant leadership, BIPOC mentorship initiatives, understanding new ways to prevent and resolve a crisis, how to foster accountability after incidents of harm, a new lifesaving overdose strategy, preserving supportive housing and ending the criminalization of homelessness.

The Network Joins the City in Celebrating Record Supportive Housing Creation and Preservation
On July 29th, the Network joined the Office of Mayor Eric Adams and NYC Department of Housing Preservation & Development (HPD) to celebrate the announcement of back-to-back record-breaking numbers for supportive housing units developed and preserved in a single year, at Services for the UnderServed's new affordable and supportive residence, Melrose North. This year alone, the City created a record 1,500 new supportive housing homes and preserved an additional 649.

On June 30th, Mayor Adams released the FY25 Adopted Budget, totaling $112.4 billion, which is over $5 billion more than the FY24 Adopted Budget. We are pleased to see that the City Council and Adams Administration heeded the calls of the sector to increase investments across the portfolio.

The Supreme Court’s distressing decision announced on June 28th is not only misguided, but inherently cruel. Homelessness is not a crime, period. The court’s ruling will undoubtedly lead to more unnecessary and dangerous interactions between law enforcement and the nation’s over 250,000 individuals who are forced to sleep outside because there are no other options.

Westhab Opens Summit on Hudson
On a steamy July 17th (98 degrees!) supporters, staff, elected officials, and partners gathered in front of Summit on Hudson’s green wall to celebrate the opening of its new six story complex atop Locust Hill in Yonkers. The 113-apartment complex provides affordable housing to families and individuals as well as formerly homeless households including individuals struggling with mental health concerns and young adult families. Support services are provided by Westhab and funded by New York State’s Empire State Supportive Housing Initiative through the Office of Mental Health.

Supporters, partners and staff gathered on July 15th to celebrate the opening of Betances Family Apartments, a new affordable/supportive apartment building at the site of NYCHA’s Betances VI campus in the Bronx. The new residence provides 101 units of deeply affordable housing, including 70 homes for extremely low, low, and moderate-income New Yorkers, including 18 units reserved for NYCHA residents, and 30 supportive apartments. Onsite services are provided by The Bridge, funded by New York City’s Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) under the NY/NY III Agreement.

Concern Housing Opens Concern Pitkin
Friends, staff and partners gathered to celebrate the opening of Concern Pitkin in Brooklyn July 9th. The new residence provides 58 new homes with 35 of them supportive. Supportive services are provided by Concern Housing and funded by the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene (DOHMH) through the NYC 15/15 initiative.

Fortune Society Breaks Ground on Castle III
On June 24th, the Fortune Society joined project partners and elected officials to break ground on Castle III in East Harlem. Once complete this affordable and supportive housing residence will bring 82 new affordable apartments, including 58 supportive apartments for individuals with justice involvement experiencing homelessness. On-site services will be provided by the Fortune Society and funded by both NYC 15/15 and the New York State Empire State Supportive Housing Initiative though the Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance (OTDA).

On June 13th, DePaul joined project partners to celebrate the opening of the Port Byron Apartments. This new affordable and supportive housing residence includes 69 new affordable apartments, including 30 supportive in Port Byron. On-site services are provided by DePaul funded by the Empire State Supportive Housing Initiative (ESSHI) administered by New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH).

On June 11th, Helio Health and Eagle Star Housing joined project partners to break ground on Court Street Apartments. When complete, this new affordable and supportive residence will create 111 affordable apartments, including 54 supportive, in Binghamton. Onsite services will be provided by Eagle Star Housing for veteran residents and by Helio Health for tenants with substance use disorders, funded by the Empire State Supportive Housing Initiative (ESSHI) administered by New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS). 

On June 4th, 2024, the Network and members testified at the New York City Council’s Committee on Contracts hearing highlighting the impacts of late contract payments and the challenges with PASSPort system implementation:

Federation of Organizations Opens Barbara Faron Residence
On June 3rd, Federation of Organizations, elected officials and project partners gathered to celebrate the ribbon-cutting of the Barbara Faron Residence, named after Federation of Organizations’ CEO Barbara Faron. This new residence brings 118 apartments, 71 which are supportive for individuals in recovery from behavioral health conditions to the Far Rockaway section of Queens.

The New York Foundling Opens New Supportive Residence
On a sunny May 31st morning, partners, supporters, and staff of The New York Foundling gathered to celebrate the opening of their new supportive housing complex part of the Urban Empowerment Center (The Center) located in central Harlem on West 125th Street.

On May 30th, Housing Visions and Catholic Charities of Onondaga County joined project partners to celebrate the opening of Moyer Carriage Lofts. This new affordable and supportive housing residence is creating 128 new affordable apartments, including 50 supportive, in Syracuse. On-site social services will be provided by Catholic Charities of Onondaga County funded by the Empire State Supportive Housing Initiative (ESSHI) administered by New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH).  

June/July 2024 Community Corner
In July 1990, President George Bush signed the Americans with Disabilities Act into law which, for the first time, provided comprehensive civil rights to people with disabilities. Twenty-five years later, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio declared July Disability Pride Month to commemorate this significant legislation. This month serves as a time to honor the uniqueness and diversity of the disability community, challenging the stigma this community faces.
