"Celebrating the Anniversary of Stonewall Riots"

with the LGBTQ+ Caucus

Join with us for the national celebration of the 55th Anniversary of Stonewall with a Prideful service and celebration. During these troubling times we like to remember the words of Quinten Crisp "In an expanding universe, time is on the side of the outcast. Those who once inhabited the suburbs of human contempt find that without changing their address they eventually live in the metropolis." The LGBTQ+ Caucus is building bridges with

our LGBTQ+ and Ally family.

Look for welcoming activities in the near future that are inspirational, educational and multigenerational. The foundation is one of education and lived experience with workshops on LGBTQ+ History and How to Be an Ally.

New Members and UUCLB Annual Awardees will also be celebrated on June 30.

Questions? Email the team at: DemocracyTeam@UUCLB.org

Unitarian Universalists for Social Justice's Democracy Movement is composed of individuals and groups that are concerned about the current state of our country and our democracy, and want to make things better. It is not a political party. Independents, Republicans, Democrats, and individuals who dislike and don't want to participate in politics, are all invited to participate in this movement.

The Democracy Movement's goal is to create a society where everyone's basic needs are met, and people have the opportunity to grow and thrive. If you believe that:

  • There is too much money in the hands of too few people
  • All people are created equal and should have equal rights
  • There is power in coming together in support of a common goal
  • We need to stop being polarized - we are all different, that's ok - most of us have a lot in common - we need to discuss and understand our differences, not fight over them
  • People should be encouraged to vote and make their voices heard
  • Although flawed, democracy is still a better system of government than autocracy / authoritarianism / fascism.

Then you should consider supporting the Democracy Movement. Here are two things you can do: (1) Find and join a local group that supports democracy, (2) Use this link http://bit.ly/uusjelection2024 to download Your Personal Plan to Help Save Our Democracy, select some items, then select some more (3) UUCLB's Saving Democracy Team meets the 2nd Monday of the month at 7:00 p.m. via Zoom. Join us. Email: DemocracyTeam@UUCLB.ORG to be put on our e-list to receive updates.

Local Organizing Committee

Mission Statement:

The mission of the Local Organizing Committee is to build coalitions with interfaith communities around common interests, related to economic justice. We foster leadership in organizing.

We are working to prevent homelessness, in partnership with Long Beach and LA Churches and organizations - please join us. Meets First Wednesdays at 3pm on Zoom. For link go to: UUCLB.org/News/Calendar

Statement of Purpose

Awaken people to their power in social justice

LA Voice “Listening Campaign” & “Home is Sacred” Narrative has resulted in SB567 and SB 4 being Signed into Law in 2023 – Thank you for supporting this effort:

  • Listening to our Congregants
  • Postcards & Letters
  • Local Interfaith Community Gatherings on Zoom and In Person
  • Rally at the Capital in Sacramento
  • Meetings with our State Representatives & Senators, Long Beach Mayor
  • News Conferences with the Press
  • Rally celebration: our petitions of 400K plus signatures achieved the first citizens coalition led ballot measure A on the November 2024 Ballot 5/7/2024

The effort for Economic Justice began in 2022. We learned that non-profit entities can lawfully inspire and support legislation that reflects our values. We (the PICO - Interfaith Communities Organizing - Network) were featured in the New York Times. LINK https://www.nytimes.com/2024/04/27/business/affordable-housing-religious-organizations.html

If you submitted a postcard with us after service or at a picnic last year - this is your achievement SB 4! SB Means State Senate Bill.

Through our individual and together efforts - We have collected signatures to put measure A on the ballot in November 2024- Thank you ! LA County Sales, a portion of the sales tax, funds services for mentally ill and low income housing development. We build a coalition around common interests and Values in our local community and in California.

There is a lot more to do this year – Come to the next local organizing meeting to learn more and collaborate with Yvonne Figueroa our LA Voice professional organizer. We are connected with Long Beach St Lukes, Grace UNC, Revive Church, Long Beach Church of Christ, Los Angeles - Dolores Mission (Homeboys industries), First UU Church of Los Angeles, Church, and have connections with SUJE, ACCE, LIBRE who support Economic Justice and fair housing for all.

Through the Senate and the Assembly, through the ups and downs, grounded by our faith, and our conviction to build an LA county, and a California with equity and abundance for all. Email Kathy Adams at UUCLB.org

June 2024

For more than 15 years, Heart of Ida has helped low-income seniors in Long Beach stay connected, healthy, happy, and loved. Their programs are designed to address both seniors’ physical health and mental wellbeing, including providing farm fresh foods, groceries, and hygiene items; access to basic technology, training, and support; connections to dozens of critical resources; and ongoing, heartfelt, personal connection. These programs include Fresh Foods, Essential Needs Pantry, Digital Inclusion, Pet Care, Personal Connections, and Holiday Hearts. The Heart of Ida envisions a community where every senior has the support they need to live independently and thrive, including feeling heard, appreciated, connected, cared for, and safe. You can help bring about this vision by volunteering. Opportunities include AgeWell Magazine deliveries, fresh produce deliveries, holiday gift deliveries and visits, Pet Walking & Care, resource application support, stay connected personal phone calls (English, Spanish, and Khmer), stay connected Recorded messages (English, Spanish, and Khmer), technology set up and troubleshooting, and more.
