Disability Pride Month Service
with Mauricio Moreno and Lynelle Wise
with special guest Helena Donato-Sapp
July is Disability Pride Month. The disabled community is a diverse, broad spectrum ranging from physical disability to neurodivergence and more. Join us as we raise awareness and educate ourselves about ablism and disability justice, celebrating the contributions of people with disabilities and becoming a stronger community of people with disabilities and allies. We will have a special guest, activist and Long Beach youth poet laureate Helena Donato-Sapp, who will share her poetry and experiences to help us navigate and create a more inclusive world!

Helena Donato-Saap is a global award-winning 15 y/o educator, writer, speaker, Long Beach Youth Poet Laureate, an award-winning disability activist, and an activist for equity + justice. She is the adopted daughter of queer parents. Our UUCLB Chapter of the Pink Haven Coalition creates a network of safety and direct support for transgender people and their families relocating locally to access gender-affirming healthcare and services. Michael Eselun, serves as the chaplain for the Simms/Mann UCLA Center for Integrative Oncology. Two-time TED-X speaker, Michael speaks extensively to healthcare professionals, patient populations and faith communities across the country. He’s also worked as an activist/educator addressing anti-LGBTQ bias in the larger community for over 30 years. Michael was recently inducted into the UCLA-Semel Institute Eudaimonia Society, in recognition of having lived a meaning-driven life. Labor Day with Guillermo Torres, Immigration Program Director for CLUE
Guillermo Torres spearheads CLUE’s immigration and outreach campaigns. Guillermo was the lead CLUE organizer for the successful living wage campaign in Long Beach as well as the first-ever Flying Food workers unionization campaign at LAX. In that capacity, he also advocated for strong community benefits agreements in new building developments, particularly for securing local, diverse hiring, and worker rights. Prior to joining CLUE, Guillermo was a Teamster and an immigrant rights activist. His faith is a vital part of his work.

Building covenantal relationships among Unitarian Universalist women that equip us all to be better co-conspirators and allies in the movement for collective liberation. Join us on the first Sunday of each month (unless it's a holiday!) to read some of the latest award-winning books as we interpret how they can be tools for social justice. The UU Women's Monthly Read will allow an entry point into our priority issues and support individuals looking to build on their understanding to be better allies and co-conspirators. Each month we alternate between a book (long form) or an article (short-form).
Programming runs an hour and a half. Auto captioning will be available.

We build a coalition around common interests and Values in our local community and in California.
We are partnering with the Saving Democracy group to support a Ballot Event.
At the next local organizing meeting learn more and collaborate with Yvonne Figueroa our LA Voice professional organizer, regarding our Voter Engagement activities. We are connected with Long Beach St Lukes, Grace UNC, Revive Church, Long Beach Church of Christ, Los Angeles - Dolores Mission (Homeboys industries), First UU Church of Los Angeles, Church, and have connections with SUJE, ACCE, LIBRE who support Economic Justice, and fair housing for all. UUA Mosaic Learning and Practice - Reserve the Date
Mosaic National Learning and Practice Gatherings support congregations’ long-term commitment to carry out Anti-racism/Anti-Oppression/Multicultural transformation work in their contexts. These gatherings will include a mix of facilitated learning from trusted voices in the movement for AR/AO/MC transformation and opportunities to be in conversation with fellow UUs from across our movement. Bienestar Human Services
| |
|
Our Social Justice recipient for the month of July is Bienestar Human Services. Bienestar was founded in 1989 as a direct response to the lack of resources available for Latinx and LGBTQ+ individuals at the height of the HIV/AIDS crisis in Southern California. Bienestar is a community-based social services organization focusing on identifying and addressing emerging health issues faced by Latinx and LGBTQ+ populations. Bienestar reaches these unique populations through innovative and compassionate peer-to-peer modeling that is 100% culturally relevant to the communities it serves. Underserved communities sit on an intersectional spectrum of experiences and needs.
Bienestar strives to rebuild the trust in our medical system, break down barriers to care, inspire our next agents of change, and provide a support system toward health equity for all. Bienestar’s education and support programs encompass HIV/ AIDS prevention, STI testing and treatment, mental health services, substance use and harm reduction, men’s health, trans health, a food bank, housing help, and youth empowerment. All services are offered to the community for free. Bienestar serves the greater Los Angeles County community with several locations, including Long Beach.
Bienestar is always accepting motivated and enthusiastic volunteers to help with their different programs and services for the community. Volunteer tasks and assignments vary across each of their centers, staff, and programs and include an internship program for students working toward a Masters in Social Work. You can read more about Bienestar at their Web site: https://www.bienestar.org/ You can support Bienstar until the last Sunday of July by mail, text, or online.
Our social justice collections take place on second Sundays, but you can support the monthly social justice recipient until the last Sunday of the month (July: Bienstar or August: DAYS Long Beach by mail, text, or online. If by mail, note “Social Justice Collection” on your check, and send it to UUCLB, 5450 E. Atherton St., Long Beach, CA 90808. Using Text-to-Give, text the words “25 Special Collection” and the amount to 833-931-1845.
To give $25, for example, text “25 Special Collection $25.” (Add “Cover fees on” to cover fees on text gifts.)
