Q & A with Bertha Osorio-Campbell

What tip would you give someone starting a business?

"For someone that is thinking about opening a business, I would say really think long and hard because this is not easy. There are a lot of things I wish I had known before going into business for myself. But what will never change is that I love to be an entrepreneur. So that side of it is always a plus...make sure you get mentored so you don't have to reinvent the wheel. Definitely invest in yourself."

"For those that are already in business, professional development... we are always learning, we are always growing, you are never the person that has arrived."

What is the secret to your success?

"My faith is what sustains me, it is what gives me the hope... when the month is so slow, but I have been in this situation before and it always works itself out. One of the mottos I go with is that I have survived 100% of the worst days of my life... so obviously, I have a great success rate... I also have a group of entrepreneur friends that do what I do, and it is amazing to be able to talk to them and vent. So those things, my faith, my success rate, and my colleagues are the secret to my success."

Why did you choose Oakland Park for your business?

"When I went looking for property, I didn't want to be too far from where I lived, but I encountered racism and people who did not want me in their property. I was surprised it still exists today, it seemed crazy. I had a friend that was in this building ... when I came here, I could feel in my spirit and my soul, the property manager and the way she handled everything; I thought, this is definitely it because if I have any issues, you have my back. So her warm welcoming and the process with Oakland Park ... the paperwork and all that stuff, it was seamless, and so were the things that made me think ... I am feeling it here in Oakland Park."

Market Report Highlights Why Oakland Park is a Smart Investment

Have you seen the Oakland Park 2022 Market Report? It highlights the reasons the City is a great place to do business, including its rare investment opportunities, business-friendly climate, innovative policies, new land development regulations, a focus on economic sustainability, and exciting vision for the downtown. Oakland Park's retail market offers competitive rental rates and sales prices, making it a valuable opportunity to help your business succeed. Its advantageous climate has helped the City experience significant growth as it continues to build its Second Century and benefit from exciting new public and private investments. The Horizon of Oakland Park project, which is featured in the report, is an effort to redevelop over four acres to create a mixed-use hub in the center of the downtown. Horizon will feature residential rental units, new retail and commercial spaces, rooftop amenities, green space, a train stop, and public parking. It will join the Sky Building, the City’s first public-private partnership redevelopment project, to advance the community vision for a sustainable, inclusive, and prosperous downtown. City Proposes Reduction to Millage Rate

Great news for property owners! City Staff are recommending another decrease in Oakland Park’s property tax rate. The proposed fiscal year 2024 budget includes a reduction from 5.8550 to 5.8362 mills. If adopted, this would be the City’s lowest millage rate in 13 years and the 9th millage rate reduction in 10 years.
